Welcome to the class for learning to be so-called e-learning assistants. This class is designed to help you get familiar with working with online educational courses, mainly through working as moderators with the course Online_Ah, which is offered to the entire university to improve the students' English skills. You will be working as assistants to help deliver the course so that you can see how it works, what works well, and what doesn't work at all. You will also help lead discussions to help people improve their communication skills. By the end of the course, you should have ideas on how to run effective online courses on your own.

Course Requirements

This course will be based half on practical experience with the online environment and half on your reflections on your experiences.

For the practice, you will be working as moderators in the course Online English. Beginning in Week 2 of this class you will have to post discussion topics and moderate the discussion that follows. The idea is to try to promote communication on interesting topics between students as much as possible. Each week you can receive 4 points for posting a topic and assisting others in their learning.

For the reflections, you have two choices. Either you can discuss your experiences every week in the forums with your fellow students - reporting what you have done and what you have learned from the experience (for which you can receive 4 points every week). Or you can wait until the end of the semester and write a longer seminar paper at the end which would be worth 48 points. For the weekly discussion, you must report your initial thoughts by Sunday night and then post additional responses by Tuesday evening. That is worth 2 points for an initial post that shows careful consideration of the topic and further two possible points for responses to others. When writing your contributions, make sure you answer all of the questions asked. This applies to all the weeks of the semester and all the threads. Also, bear in mind, that your contributions should be informed by your reading for that particular week!

There will also be 4 points available in the first week (2 points for introducing yourself and 2 points for posting a relevant article). That's a total of 100 possible points. 80 points are necessary to pass the class.

If you want to know how many points you have already received, check your notebook (poznámkový blok): Student -> Information from Notebooks. Points are recalculated every night when few people are using the system, so the changes are not seen immediately.

If you have any questions about the class at any time, please use the main discussion forum for this course (linked immediately below).

Please note that in the syllabus below, the materials are not final until the week of the topic comes. Until then, changes may be made (such as updating the links to this years' discussion forums).
