- 1.What is the course opinion poll?
The course opinion poll is a key tool for student assessment of teaching on a university-wide level. The opinion poll provides each student with the opportunity to provide feedback to teachers and their superiors regarding courses he/she was enrolled in in a given semester.
In case of questions, please contact the personnel of the Strategy Office of the MU Rector's Office at pruzkumy@muni.cz.
- 2.Who is eligible for participating in the university-wide course opinion poll?
The course opinion poll is open to all students with active studies; a student may complete a poll for each of his/her active studies. A student who has interrupted or completed his/her studies and who is not participating in any course in a given semester is not allowed to participate in the poll. See list of courses not included in the course opinion poll (Czech only).
- 3.Is the course opinion poll truly anonymous?
The course opinion poll is anonymized. All of its components are filled out entirely within the authenticated part of the MU Information System. The respondent's identity, i.e. his/her name, personal identification number or other personal information, is not disclosed to anyone at any time.
The course opinion poll is anonymized. Although the students provide their course-related feedback after logging into the Information System is.muni.cz, i.e. under their profiles, the information identifying them such as their names, personal identification numbers (UČOs), etc. is not revealed to anyone.
The reason why the respondents provide their feedback under their profiles and not, for instance, after using some anonymous codes distributed to them is that the latter method would not provide them with the comfort of the former. That is, the System, for instance, keeps track of who has participated in the poll already and thus it can prompt the ones who have not taken part in it yet to do so or it can grant access to the opinion poll results only to those who participated the previous year. Motivating the respondents plays a crucial role in ensuring there are enough of them and thus the feedback they provide is more reliable.
The respondents' willingness to participate in the poll depends on how easy to fill in the questionnaires are, whether the respondents consider the poll useful and, most importantly, whether they find it safe in terms of privacy. This is also the reason why the System administrators consider anonymity to be an issue of high importance. The school management appreciate the effort the students put into providing the course-related feedback. The Information System administrators are prohibited from revealing the respondents' identity to anyone. Any person found violating this rule is to be subject to strict disciplinary proceedings.
As all the operations made in the Information System are recorded, there is always a way of revealing the respondent's identity with some effort invested into it on the part of System administrators. You might therefore feel tempted to ask the question of whether it would be feasible to design the System some other way guaranteeing this cannot be done. Although the answer to this question is "Yes.", designing and administering the System this way would be rather uneconomical. That is, keeping the Internet transactions utterly anonymous (e.g. by not logging the IP addresses of the computers accessing the System, etc.) is complicated. Besides, investing money into the development of a system guaranteeing total anonymity in the environment of a university course opinion poll is pointless since students would have to believe that the poll is run the way it is said to be, i.e. with no cues that might possibly be used to reveal the respondent's identity recorded. The situation would therefore be the same as it is now – the students would have to trust the system. The fact the respondent's identity is never to be revealed to anyone is guaranteed by the school management.
- 4.Where is the course opinion poll located within the IS?
The poll may be accessed using the following path:
The Information System Student End of term Course opinion polls - 5.When can I participate in the opinion poll?
The course opinion poll opens following the end of instruction. Responses are collected prior to the end of the autumn or spring semester. The exact dates may be found in the application itself.
The Information System Student End of term Course opinion pollsAnswers may be changed and verbal comments edited at any point during this period of time.
The course opinion poll should only be filled out following the completion of an entire course (including any form of course completion requirement including the allocation of credits, taking of examinations, etc.) so that a student's experience with that course (and teacher) is complete and his/her answers are unbiased.
- 6.When is my course opinion poll filled out sufficiently?
In order to sufficiently fill out the course opinion poll, you must complete at least half of your courses or at least ten courses enrolled in the current period. In order for a course to be considered complete,, you must answer all of the mandatory questions for at least one course–teacher or seminar group–tutor combination.
The teachers will always receive all saved responses, regardless of whether individual students have filled out sufficiently the course opinion poll as a whole.
In case of multiple active studies, all courses enrolled in all studies are considered in order to evaluate whether your course opinion poll is filled out sufficiently. A course enrolled simultaneously in more than one instance of active studies is only counted once.
- 7.What questions does the course opinion poll include and how am I expected to answer?
Beginning with the autumn 2016 semester, the course opinion poll consists of 6 questions. Since autumn 2023 one new question was added, since autumn 2024 one question was deleted, i.e. still a total of 6 questions.
The first question focuses on the course as a coherent unit within a given semester, i.e. including any seminar groups taking place within the framework of such a course. Only one answer is thus required, regardless of how many teachers are actually associated with such a course. Answer to this question is saved for the entire course (i.e. all course–teacher and seminar group–tutor combinations) regardless of which course teacher or tutor the question was answered for.
The course is of educational value to me; it enriches me. – The question requires students to provide an answer on a scale from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree" with a given statement; if necessary, students may provide "no answer".
Four additional questions are associated with a particular course teacher or seminar group tutor. These questions are answered individually for each teacher. Answers indicate student opinion of each statement, expressed on a scale from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree"; if necessary, students may provide "no answer".
- The teacher’s presentation of the subject matter was always clearly intelligible.
- The teacher was always well prepared for class.
- The teacher provided clear information regarding the knowledge and skills that will be evaluated.
- The teacher always communicated with and treated students with respect.
The final question is associated with a particular course teacher or seminar group tutor. This question is optional. Students may provide the teacher with comprehensive feedback, including critical comments as well as a positive evaluation of his/her work.
- In your opinion, what does the teacher excel in? What do you value most in their course or in their approach to teaching? Do you have any recommendations regarding the teacher's lessons or approach to teaching? – The answer provided in the form of a written commentary.
Due to their specific nature, CORE courses are assessed using a special set of questions such as scale-based, multiple-choice, or open-ended questions.
- 8.I am not sure what is meant by a given question. What should I do?
Each question is accompanied by a description (contextual commentary) designed to provide students with a clear and unambiguous understanding of the question in order to strengthen the validity of their responses. As these descriptions are designed to cover a broad range of different situations in various courses at individual faculties, the commentaries are quite long so they are hidden and may be displayed by clicking a button Display additional information. The last hide/display setting is used on accessing an intermittently closed course opinion poll again.
- 9.What are faculty-specific questions in the course opinion poll?
Faculties may include specific questions in the course opinion poll. Faculty-specific questions are mandatory. They are marked with the faculty abbreviation and faculty-specific question sequence number in the course opinion poll form. Faculty-specific questions are only associated with courses taught at a faculty which has opted to include its own questions in the course opinion poll. Faculties making use of this option currently include the MU Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Studies, Faculty of Informatics and Faculty of Sports Studies.
- 10.Do I have to provide answers to all questions in the course opinion poll? Which questions are mandatory?
Mandatory questions for each combination (course–teacher or seminar–instructor) include the first course-related question, four questions (2–5) focusing on an individual teacher and all faculty-specific questions. Question 6 is optional.
- 11.When is it acceptable to select "no answer" in the course opinion poll?
In case you are unable to rate a statement on a scale from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree", you may select "no answer".
"The teacher provided clear information regarding the knowledge and skills to be evaluated." – The course was taught by several teachers in succession and students were provided with information regarding examination content by only one of them at the outset. Successive teachers did not provide examination content information; after all, it had already been provided. In the case of such teachers, it is preferable to select "no answer".
- 12.Which courses are included in evaluating whether my course opinion poll is filled out sufficiently?
A personalized list of courses and teachers is generated automatically from the Course Catalogue on the basis of courses enrolled in a given period with the exception of courses recognized from other studies or courses excluded from the poll entirely (list of courses excluded from the course opinion poll [Czech only]).
In case of multiple active studies, all courses enrolled in all studies are considered in order to evaluate whether your course opinion poll is filled out sufficiently. A course enrolled simultaneously in more than one instance of active studies is only counted once.
- 13.Why does my list of courses and teachers include teachers who never taught me?
A list of teachers associated with a given course is generated automatically from Course Catalogue. It is possible that such a list may include persons who did not teach the course you attended. In case your list of courses and teachers includes a teacher who has not taught you, please do not respond so that your answers do not distort the outcome. In order for a course to be considered complete, you must answer all of the mandatory questions for at least one course–teacher or seminar group–tutor combination.
Answers should always be associated with a specific teacher in case he/she is designated as a lecturer. Answers may also be provided for each seminar group you are enrolled in, separately for each seminar tutor. In case a seminar group you are enrolled in is not associated with a teacher, the seminar group will be displayed without one. If there are no seminar groups established for the course, then those identified as seminar tutors will be offered to all students in the course for evaluation in the survey.
In case no suitable teacher is found using the above described method, the course will be displayed with no teacher listed. However, a full list of questions will still be displayed, including questions focusing on the course teacher. If you wish to answer these questions, please fill in the name of the teacher you are evaluating in a written comment in question No. 6.
Teachers will not be associated with a course in case they are listed as an alternate examiners, seminar tutors or assistants.
- 14.If the list of courses and teachers displays a course with no teacher assigned, is it still possible to evaluate this course?
The list of courses and teachers is generated automatically from the Course Catalogue on the basis of courses enrolled by a student in a given period. In case no teacher or tutor is listed in the Course Catalogue, the course opinion poll will display a course with no teacher assigned.
However, a full list of questions will still be displayed, including questions focusing on the course teacher. If you wish to answer these questions, please fill in the name of the teacher you are evaluating in a written comment in question No. 6. In order to be assessed correctly, comments must be associated with a specific teacher.
- 15.How do I choose the correct teacher or tutor from the list?
In case your list of courses and teachers includes a teacher who has not taught you, please do not respond so that your answers do not distort the outcome. Likewise, in case your list includes a course or seminar group you have not attended, please leave these items blank. You are not required to evaluate all courses, neither all combinations course–teacher or seminar group–tutor. For more information see When is my course opinion poll filled out sufficiently?. A course enrolled in more than one instance of active studies is considered sufficiently filled out once it has been completed in one of these studies.
- 16.What happens if I fail to complete the course opinion poll?
A student who fails to fill out the poll sufficiently and who has been enrolled in a degree programme for more than one semester will not be granted access to course opinion poll outcomes, i.e. he/she will not be able to access individual course results. However, a student enrolled in his/her studies for a period shorter than one semester may access existing poll statistics without limitations.
- 17.Why do I keep receiving e-mails reminding me to complete the course opinion poll?
Masaryk University actively encourages students to complete the course opinion poll simply because it is an invaluable university-wide tool for collecting feedback on its activities. By sharing your opinions, you are contributing answers to an expanding body of responses. The more students complete the poll, the more accurately the poll findings portray reality and the more meaningful the final results tend to be. Course opinion poll answers are subsequently analysed by experts responsible for improving the quality of teaching at MU. E-mails reminding students to take part may thus not be switched off.
- 18.Although I completed the course opinion poll a long time ago, I do not have access to poll results.
Course opinion poll results will be made available only after the poll closes. The publication of responses prior to that time could have an undesirable influence on poll results.
- 19.I cannot see subject XY on the website with the course opinion poll results. However, I am sure I have replied.
Responses are only published in case all mandatory questions for a given course have been answered by at least 10 % of all enrolled students and no less than five students in total. Students who sufficiently completed the course option poll (see When is my course opinion poll filled out sufficiently?), may view the results of all sufficiently filled out courses at MU.
- 20.How are the results of the course opinion poll displayed?
Path to the Course Opinion Poll results application for student:
The Information System Student End of Term Course opinion pollsWhen entering the Course Opinion Poll results application, the student has preselected by default the subjects that he/she assessed in the given semester and that he/she is registered/enrolled in in the selected semester.
1 The option "My courses" after clicking "Select only certain courses" will show only the relevant objects (course–teacher or seminar group–tutor combinations) according to the selected period in the list.
2 In the older version, selecting “My Courses” and then clicking “Select only certain courses” displayed only the objects relevant to the student. The new version does this automatically.
3Button for displaying the selected course opinion poll results.
4Option to search for any course at MU and display its course opinion poll (if any results have been collected for it).
Questions 1 to 5 required students to provide an answer on a scale from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree" with a given statement; if necessary, students were also given the option to provide "no answer". These answers are displayed in an interactive graph with response rates.
The interactive graph allows users to click on an item in order to hide/show the proportion of a selected category in the graph. Placing your cursor on individual response categories will display a percentage; pointing to the question itself will display the full question text (hidden in the case of small screens).
1 Hiding/showing the share of the selected category in the chart.
2 Number of students who answered the question.
Columns next to the graph indicate the number of students who provided answers to a question relevant to a specific course (question 1) or teacher (questions 2 to 5), mean course and teacher score at a given faculty and mean selected course and teacher score.
All written comments by means of which the students were enabled to elaborate their replies are only displayed to the relevant teachers and their superiors (for example course supervisor has the right to read written comments related to course teachers; course lecturer has the right for comments related to seminar tutors and other lecturers as well). The MU Faculty of Social Studies is the only exception to this rule; the faculty has decided to display all written responses anonymously to teachers and students alike.
Due to their specific nature, CORE courses are assessed using a special set of questions. Their results are displayed similarly with interactive graphs, frequency tables for multiple-choice questions, or a list of written comments.
1 Example of a special set of questions from the evaluation of CORE courses (switched to the new design).
- 21.How is the feedback from the lecturers guaranteed in the course opinion poll?
Teachers have the opportunity to respond to course opinion poll results by including their comments in a text box located below the results of a given course. Any such responses will appear alongside the results for a given course and teacher.
1 Example of an inserted feedback from the lecturer.
- 22.How are CORE courses assessed?
Due to their specific nature, CORE courses are assessed using a special set of questions aimed at, among other things, whether the course expanded knowledge within/beyond the scope of the field of study, whether it motivated the enrollment of other courses that broaden the overview, what teaching methods were used, and what teaching materials were provided.
