The aim of the Master’s degree study programme in Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in Portuguese Language and Literature is to prepare qualified and competent teachers of the Portuguese language and literature who are comprehensively educated for teaching at secondary and language schools where Portuguese is taught as a foreign language.

Graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills and competences required for theoretical study, application disciplines, and practical language knowledge and skills, as well as literary and cultural vision. Enrolling students will have language mastery at the C1 level and graduates will have language mastery at the C2 level according to the CEFR.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • produce dignified written and oral expression in Portuguese at the C2 level according to the CEFR
  • utilize detailed knowledge of the social, political, cultural, literary, and linguistic situations in Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries
  • plan, prepare, analyse and evaluate the teaching of the Portuguese language in secondary schools

Graduates find positions at secondary schools of various types and orientation as well as in special language schools where Portuguese is taught as a foreign language.

The standard duration of studies is two years, degree conferred: Master’s (Mgr.)

For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. Type A/required courses form the basis of the discipline, with 20 credits in the common pedagogical-psychological courses, 62 credits for major studies and 56 credits in minor studies in didactics, linguistics, and literature. Type B/selective and type C/elective courses can be earned in School Teacher Training in Portuguese Language and Literature, in other Romance disciplines, or in other fields taught at Masaryk University.

All students are obliged to attend at least one course taught in English corresponding to the degree of studies.

During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

Students receive a continuous four-week practical training, including didactic practice of classroom lesson didactics with a tutor. Feedback reflection is an integral part of didactics.

The state exam consists of: 1) a defence of the thesis; 2) a two-part test of the subject-field-component studies including didactics approbation discipline, with one part being a final written essay lasting 4 hours and based on the student focus in language and literature, testing the ability of students to approach a professional topic and the other part being an oral exam that focuses on theoretical knowledge and knowledge of the Portuguese language and literature and didactics of Portuguese; 3) a written exam of pedagogical-psychological subjects.

Graduates of this Master’s degree study programme can continue in the doctoral degree study programmes in Romance languages, Romance literatures, or other appropriate doctoral studies.
