Students develop their creativity as a precursor of their future special art work and acquire practical art skills, develop their artistic activities and acquire basic interdisciplinary theoretical knowledge.

They gain an overview of the developmental stages of the history of art; in practical workshops they are familiarised with artistic techniques and learn the basics of didactics with respect to special art teaching. A distinctive and long-lasting tradition of the Brno department is an emphasis on the presentation of socially disadvantaged groups.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • show special professional knowledge and skills in art education primarily focused on working with individuals with special educational needs
  • consult in the field of special art education
  • demonstrate expertise and skills in the field of special education with regard to art education
  • show an understanding of current art with personal interest and offer clients access to their own creation

Graduates are trained primarily for working in the initial stages of academic work with individuals with special educational needs. The disciplines of the common core subjects should contribute in helping them select the teaching field. They also have the preconditions to train for further jobs in their field. At the same time they can also work as teaching assistants and in various assistant positions in different educational establishments.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. For admittance to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 180 ECTS credits in required, selective and elective courses. For all students there is an obligation to complete at least one course taught in English from the ones on offer at the department for the given level of studies.

During the course of their studies students should follow the "Study catalogue" for their year of matriculation. They can access the "Study catalogues" through the faculty website.

The practical preparation of students with special characteristics. The students have the opportunity to learn more about professional activities in special organisations, thus giving them the chance to look at different social groups than when doing normal teaching practice, and thereby helping them to decide on their own professional future.

Students acquire specific skills to support their educational goals, especially in the area of communication, the support of cooperation, self-presentation, creativity, teaching improvisation, etc.

Especially art teaching practice serves to extend and link awareness of the possibilities of alternative approaches in education.

The Bachelor's final state examination in the field of special art education is designed to verify how the student is versed in the art and special education as a creative personality, in contemporary art and in exhibitions and events. The exam is an oral follow-up to the defence of the Bachelor's thesis. Students should be able to formulate a personal interpretation of current events and special art pedagogy that they have noticed during their studies. They should also be able to comment on their own art and special education activities theoretically and using specialized terminology. The test primarily verifies the level of the students' independent creative thinking and maturity.

The structure (s) of the Bachelor's final state examination in special art education:

1. Defense of the thesis.

2. Required part (written form): Art

- Questions are drawn from the field of art education. The test is conducted in the form of an electronic test.

3. Required part (oral form): Special Art

- Questions are drawn from the area of special art education. The test is conducted in oral form within the thesis defense.

4. Optional part (written form): Integrative special education

After completion of the Bachelor's studies, it is possible to continue further studies in any Master's degree programme (after satisfying the admission requirements). At the Faculty of Education students can apply for admission to a follow-up Master's degree in Special Art Education, or Art Education with Special Education.
