The doctoral study programme Criminal Law is the follow-up to the courses of the Master’s study programme: Criminal Law Substantive and Procedural, Criminology and Criminalistics. It is aimed at scientific research and independent creative activity in the area of research of the mentioned disciplines. The specialized courses of the discipline are: Criminal Law Substantive (general and special part), Criminal Law Procedural (general and special part), Criminal Science (including Criminology and Criminalistics, their general and special part). Following the Criminal Law Substantive and Procedural also selected aspects as constitutional-law, international-law and European-law do not stay aloof. During the study the emphasis is put on theoretical points of view of the mentioned courses in combination with their impacts in the basis areas of criminal-law practice. The objective and part of the study is acquisition of the bases of scientific work and the ability to apply the theoretical knowledge during the solution od practical problems. The programme is intended particularly for those who want to engage in academic career and scientific work, alternatively for those who want to acquire the deeper theoretical knowledge in some of legal disciplines.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- understand the methodology of scientific work in the area of law and legal science.
- fully understand the theoretical basis of the discipline of Criminal Law.
- involve the acquired theoretical basis into solution of practical problems.
- realize an indenpendent creative and scientific activity.
- present results of his/her scientific activity at national and international fora.
The graduate of the study discipline will be prepared for professional scientific work in the areal of research, legislation, judiciary and in also further areas where the deep theoretical basis is necessary.
The study plan of the postgraduate student of the discipline is given by the valid accreditation. It contains the theme of the doctoral thesis, required courses (it means the courses bound to the discipline and to its wider basis including the chosen foreign language), selective courses (it means the courses bound to pedagogical and scientific work) and requirements of supervisor. The student is obliged to complete all required courses and further selective courses in the minimum extent of 16 credits during the study (the standard duration of the study is four years). The student is obliged to pass the state doctoral examination and submit the doctoral thesis on topic bound to the discipline for the defence.
The study is credited by the system ECTS and it is necessary to acquire at least 240 credits for its successful completion (minimum credit profit required for entry into further year of study is 20). The student is obliged to complete the state doctoral examination which usually takes place in third or fourth year of the study, it is oral, has a commission nature and its content consists of the themes of discipline courses. The study is then completed by the defence of the doctoral thesis which is an original scientific work drawn up on a topic specified by the study plan. Minimum required extent of the doctoral thesis is 150 pages, where it being understood that the thesis or its essential part will have been published in some of usual ways by the time of its defence (it means in form of peer-reviewed articles, monograph etc.)
