The goal of this study programme is to learn how to do research in the medical fields of Anesthesiology, Intensive Medicine and Pain Management (ANIMAL). Students will be able to connect ANIMAL topics with related clinical topics (e.g. surgical ones) and with basic research (e.g. biology, genetics and others).

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • propose and implement (lead) a research project in clinical research;
  • critically analyse knowledge of the respective field;
  • understand basic statistics.

A PhD is a condition for gaining a leading position connected with research (e.g. a representative for education and science/research, head of department) in scientific organisations such as the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University or the University Hospital Brno.

The standard duration of this study programme is 8 semesters (max. 14 semesters).

Education in the field of Anesthesiology, Intensive Medicine and Pain Management includes: compulsory courses, selective courses and elective courses, international, national and local meetings and conferences, and publications.

Compulsory courses set forth by the department are: Clinical Data Analysis and Design and Analyses of Clinical Trials. English is a compulsory course for all students of the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University.

At least two other elective courses will be determined by the supervisor at the beginning of studies while creating the study plan. The minimal compulsory activity regarding attendance of international, national and local meetings and conferences includes:

passive participation in 1 international meeting within the duration of the study programme

passive participation in 1 national meeting per year

active participation in 1 national meeting within the duration of the study programme

passive participation in seminars of clinic continuously

active participation in 1 seminar of the clinic per the study programme

Completion of compulsory courses.

Submission of the doctoral thesis.

Fulfilling the minimal publication requirements (the minimal amount of points is 12 according to the credit system). Since 2011 at least one publication of original research results in a journal with impact factor must be presented at the defence of the doctoral thesis; the student must be the first author or co-author. In the case of co-authorship, one more publication of original research results is required in a journal without impact factor.

Passing the state doctoral examination.

Successful defence of the doctoral thesis before the board of doctoral studies.
