Service Science, Management and Engineering

Expand all the items

This study programme follows the current large shift from the traditional paradigm of IT design to IT as a service and from product-oriented economy to service-oriented one. Problems and tasks in IT are becoming more complex and the knowledge of IT technology is not sufficient for solving them. A multidisciplinary view is the core of this study programme. Students will gain not only sound IT knowledge (programming, databases, computer security, networks, etc.), but also the skills necessary to understand problems in their complexity (marketing, management, finance or law) as well as necessary communication competencies. A unique part of the study program is an Interim project, where students apply their knowledge obtained in their courses to real-life problems. This project is carried out in cooperation with a company focused on services. Results of this project typically form the basis of students' Masters' theses.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • analyze, design and implement IT projects as service systems;
  • explain the principles of service-oriented economy;
  • apply principles of service-oriented economy to designing systems;
  • understand the behavior and structure of service systems;
  • identify value propositions in various business situations;
  • evaluate existing services, services offering, services description, and services provision;
  • carry out business negotiations, proposal presentations and their advocation.

Graduates can usually enter junior manager positions or work on design and development of service systems or on their innovations. They can use their experience in positions that require fast orientation in problems of multidisciplinary nature and co-create values between a customer and an IT service provider. Excellent students may seek PhD studies at the faculty. Some graduates may develop their own commercial projects that were formed during their studies.

The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To be admitted to take the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and on top of these, a student has to fulfil several thematic blocks of selective courses. This amounts to at least 88 credits. The student has to write and submit Master's thesis and gain 20 credits for it. The remaining 12 credits can be obtained with respect to the student's own preferences or planned specialisation. During the course of their studies, students should follow the course catalogue.

Practical training supervised by an academic staff member is an obligatory part of the curriculum for this study programme. This is done within the Interim project at a commercial partner of the faculty. There are two options. Either, the course "PA180 Interim Project I + II" represents a one-semester Interim Project, where 4 days a week for 5 months are expected to be spent at the business partner. Or, the courses "PA185 Interim Project I" and "PA186 Interim Project II" represent a two-semester Interim project, where 2 or 3 days a week for 10 months are spent at the business partner. In both cases, the student has to obtain 16 ECTS credits in total. This part is typically arranged by the student and negotiated with a representative of the company. The topic and focus of the project are approved by an academic staff member. The project must aim at managing and developing a project and cannot be oriented on mere software coding.

(?)

The final state exam consists of diploma thesis defence and an oral exam. The oral part assesses the knowledge gained during the studies and also possibly experience obtained during the interim project. There are typically two subject areas evaluated. The oral exam topics are listed in the course catalogue.

Excellent and highly motivated students may seek PhD studies at the faculty.
