After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• Know geography as a discipline, and has an overview of the geographical curriculum which helps pupils to understand the nature of geography as a boundary discipline between physical and social sciences
• Work with methods of geographic research particularly in the area of data collection and field work, and he/she knows how to use them in teaching geography as powerful learning strategies
• Support the development of geographical thinking of pupils based on mutual communication and appropriately chosen forms and methods of teaching
• Work with methods of educational research in the field of teaching quality assessment and self-reflection as a tool for personal development
• Seek to understand the age differences among pupils and students who they are teaching, and tries to create a safe, supportive and intellectually challenging learning environment
• Plan, evaluate, generate reports and statements, react to changes in the educational system and in conformity with this activity seeks gradual professional growth and development
• Communicate not only with students but also with other participants in the educational process, i.e. with parents, colleagues, staff counselling services and other professionals and school partners

The Master's degree students are trained under the programme of Primary and Lower Secondary School Teaching, or Secondary School Teaching, usually with a combination of two disciplines (e.g. Geography Teaching and Maths Teaching). Through studying the Master's programme, graduates gain the necessary competence which enables them, in accordance with Act no. 563/2004 Coll., on teachers, to work as teachers. Moreover, the graduates are qualified to work in extracurricular institutions. They are ready to establish their professional behaviour based on well-structured knowledge and skills in their disciplines.

The standard length of studies is four semesters. Studying the Master’s degree consists of the professional field component, teaching specialization and a group of subjects in accordance with the standard of Masaryk University (thesis subjects, language training, physical education, etc.). A necessary condition for the successful completion of studies in any programme or field is to obtain credits for completing the courses within a plan. To sum up, it is obligatory to obtain a minimum of 120 credits in the Master‘s degree programme.

Teaching practice is in accordance with the framework concepts. The system of teaching practice is set up in such a way as to be systematically directed towards the development of professional skills of the student and to prepare him/her fully for the role of teacher. Teaching practice in the Master’s programme is an extension to the practice implemented in preparing teachers for the role of an assistant in the undergraduate studies. Required courses in teaching practice in a given field are Teaching Practice 2, Seminar on Teaching Practice 2 and Teaching practice 3. At the end of this teaching practice, students should act autonomously in the classroom and become novice teachers who develop their skills in further education.

The contents of the final state examination are as follows:

- Geography including didactics

- The second study field, including didactics

- Thesis defence

- Pedagogical and psychological basis for Master's studies

The subjects of the state examination are based on the core disciplines of geography and didactics. The topics of the final state examination in the course Geography with Didactics consist of three parts corresponding to subjects included in the Master‘s study programme - the student draws out one of the topics and responds to the questions included in this particular topic. Students must prove that they can work with the atlas and that they can master further cartographical skills. Topics consist of three parts (a, b, c):

PART A – includes topics regarding geography didactics that consist of a pedagogical and psychological part and of a practical part.

PART B – includes topics regarding regional geography of Europe, Asia, Africa, America, Australia and Oceania and the polar regions, and the Czech Republic.

PART C – includes topics regarding the Science of Countryside and Effective Geography.

Graduates of the Master's degree programme may continue in the doctoral programme Specialization in Education, Geography Didactics.
