The study programme of Applied and Environmental Geology is designed for those who plan to work in different geological companies of applied science.

The Bachelor’s study programme of Geology offers a complex higher education in geological disciplines. Its goal is to prepare graduates for the follow-up Master’s degree programmes in Geology. The curriculum of the Bachelor’s study programme of Geology covers the basics of geological disciplines. The profile subjects are General Geology, Paleontology, Historical Geology, Regional Geology, Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry. An integral part of the study is practical training in the field and field work. Participants will be trained in geology-archeology and geoscience environmentalistics.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • explain and use basic geological terminology
  • recognize principal minerals, rocks, fossils and structures
  • use principal geological research methods including documentation of geological outcrops and exposures, sampling, data processing etc., with a focus on skills in applied fields
  • solve particular geological problems, interpret the results of their research and present them in written and oral forms
  • use the theoretical knowledge of geological sub-disciplines
  • study literature, process the data and interpret them creatively

Graduates will find employment in the companies of applied geology (exploration, mining and quarrying, prospecting and ground water protection, geomechanics, geoconservation,etc.), at universities, cultural institutions, environmental institutions and in state administration.

The standard duration of the study is six semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 180 credits for required, selective and elective courses. Students must complete all required and a number of selective courses so that the total amount of credits for all courses in the field was at least 162. The remaining 18 credits can be obtained from elective courses offered in the curriculum of the given study programme or from other courses offered by any other study programme. During the course of their studies, students should follow the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Course Catalogues through the faculty website.

The study programme includes the principles of the major disciplines of geological sciences (the theoretical basis), practical training (identifying specimens, field exercises), courses of thesis preparation and specialized courses preparing students for practical work in companies (applied courses, field documentation, sampling, writing reports).

To successfully complete the studies, students are obliged to pass the final state examination which consists of two parts. 1) a test of theoretical knowledge from the required courses, 2) a Bachelor's thesis defence dealing with a practically oriented topic.

Practical training (field documentation and practical exercises) is an obligatory part of the curriculum. Field exercises and excursions are part of the electives.

The final state examination consists of two parts: 1) a theoretical examination usually in the form of a written test covering all the required courses; 2) a Bachelor's thesis defence.

After completing the Bachelor's study programme of Geology, students can pursue their studies in the follow-up Master's study programme or in other Master's degree programmes in Geology
