The standard duration of studies is four semesters. For admittance to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits in required, selective and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and make up 81 credits (including credits for courses focused on writing a Master’s thesis). Out of the selective courses, which make up 24 credits in total, students choose according to their interests and intended professional specialization. The remaining 15 credits can be obtained from elective courses offered in the curriculum of the given study programme or from other courses offered by any other study programme.
During the course of their studies students should follow the "Study catalogue" for their year of matriculation. They can access the "Study catalogues" through the faculty website.
Students can learn more about the professional activities of specialized or socio-educational institutions, thereby gaining greater insight into the education of pupils with special educational needs than is usual in teaching practice in mainstream schools, and this helps in deciding on their own professional profiling. Students acquire specific skills to support educational goals, especially in the areas of communication, supporting cooperation, self-presentation, creativity, teaching improvisation, etc. The course content also serves to expand and link awareness about the possibilities of alternative approaches in education.
Teaching practice should be undertaken four times during the period of studies: twice in a variety of special and socio-educational facilities, and twice in mainstream schools.
The final state examination in special art education consists of three parts: a defense of the thesis, the required subjects and the selective subjects.
A mandatory part of art education is conceived from the theory and history of art and the theory of teaching.
A mandatory part of special education is made up of strategies in the education of pupils with special educational needs.
After completion of the Master's studies, it is possible to continue with further studies in the doctoral degree programme (after satisfying the admission requirements). At the Faculty of Education students can apply for admission to a follow-up doctoral degree in the Theory of Art and Gallery Education.
