The aim of the doctoral degree study programme in the field of archaeology is to lead the students to independent and original scientific research in archaeology on an international level. The study is designed so that the students can apply and enhance their theoretical and methodological knowledge in a creative way. Focus is laid especially o research work conducted under the supervision of a doctoral adviser, and on regular methodological seminars where topics and methods are discussed in a wider professional collective. The study programme also includes regular lectures by foreign experts. There are regular presentations in the research community and publication of partial results of research. As a part of their professional training, doctoral students participate in teaching and research projects of their home department. Students are advised to complete a research fellowship abroad. Doctoral studies in the field of archaeology cover all specializations within this discipline Masaryk University has a competent team of doctoral supervisors and offers doctoral students motivation and background for their research career on an international level.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- solve important research problems in a creative way, develop methodological approaches, and define theoretical models
- present and publish research results in the international research community
- lead research teams and manage research projects
- carry out educational and promotional work in academic institutions
Graduates are prepared for research work in academic institutions at home and abroad. They will find employment as leaders and members of research teams, research chiefs and research workers in a wide spectrum of archaeological and memory institutions, and as state and public administration officers.
The standard duration of studies is eight semesters. For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 240 credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. Required courses are 125 credits, in archaeology are mainly related to preparing a doctoral thesis and enhancing the theoretical and methodological basis of the work. Recommended selective and elective courses include a semester-long internship abroad, professional publication, and teaching in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree study programmes. Students also acquire 40 credits for the basic courses common to all doctoral students of the Faculty of Arts of the Masaryk University.
The students must pass the state examination and submit and defend the dissertation. The final state examination is oral and is focused on how knowledgeable doctoral students are about topical research problems in archaeology. The dissertation is a complex scientific paper, by means of which the students demonstrate their theoretical, methodological, analytical, and synthetic readiness for top-class research work.
