Genomics and Proteomics
“Latius et altius.”
The doctoral study programme of Genomics and Proteomics at the Faculty of Science MU is oriented on the study of relations between organismal genetic information and a complex of proteins which are coded by the given genome. It also concentrates on the functions of so-called non-coding genome sequences, e.g., regulatory functions. This study programme is of the interdisciplinary nature and uses approaches of analytical chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, statistics, informatics and computer modelling. In the frame of the field, it is possible to further specialize on functional genomics (relations between sequence, structure of genes and non-coding regions and their functions in an organism), evolutionary genomics (changes in genomes throughout the evolution), comparative genomics (general principles applicable to all genome groups), expression proteomics (whole proteome studies including post-translational modifications), functional proteomics (protein interactions) or structural proteomics (structure-function relation).
Graduates primarily acquire extensive and in-depth knowledge about the structure and function of the genome and proteome on all basic levels of living systems. Students deepen their knowledge and skills in elementary biological disciplines (primarily genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, biostatistics, organismal physiology), biochemistry and chemistry (general biochemistry, enzymology, biochemical methods) or bioanalytics (mostly separation methods and mass spectrometry). Besides theoretical principles of the respective field, students are also acquainted in detail with the procedure of basic and advanced methods utilised in individual disciplines.
The studies are suitable for students with strong self-motivation. Genomic and proteomic problems require analytical and critical thinking, respect for demanding experimental work and commitment to intense study. Involving the student into the scientific group operation is an important part of the studies, along with gaining the elementary experience with research work management.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- conduct self-reliant creative scientific work
- demonstrate independent orientation - theoretical and methodical, in an assigned topic
- acquire relevant and methodologically correct data and interpret achieved results
- present findings in relevant scientific media (reviewed scientific journals, conferences), defend them in the review process and also on open forums
- evaluate the current trends in the field
- pass the acquired experience pedagogically on to Master’s & Bachelor’s degree students
Graduates of the doctoral study programme of Genomics and Proteomics at the Faculty of Science MU are prepared to work in basic and applied research focused on genome analysis, bioinformatics (including evolutionary aspects), molecular medicine field (oncological diseases, familial and inherited diseases, gene therapy), gene engineering of microorganisms, plants and animals, development of new biotechnologies, pharmacogenomics and proteome analyses of individual groups of organisms, H. s. sapiens included.
They may further work in secondary education, laboratory operations and companies, agriculture, veterinary medicine, food industry, environmental protection institutions, administration, etc.
The study plans for degree and study programmes at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University follow the Dean’s Measure No. 8/2012 „Teaching and Composition of Study Programmes”. Obligatory rules for study are listed in the Course Catalogue of a given matriculation year where are also listed recommended study plans. Students who would follow them are ensured to have correct consecution of subjects and fulfilment of the obligations necessary for the completion of the university studies within the standard period of study.
The standard period of the study programme of Genomics and Proteomics is 8 semesters. To be able to attend the state doctoral examination, students have to acquire 240 credits in subjects expanding and deepening knowledge of a broader field of study, beyond the Master’s degree programme, courses developing specific knowledge, specialised seminars, pedagogical assistance in teaching students of Master’s and Bachelor’s degree programmes. It may be established, that some of these subjects, namely field and specialized seminars, are required.
The course of study follows the customized study plan approved by the doctoral studies board, it is compiled by the student and submitted through the student’s supervisor. The customized study plan has a priority over the academic year schedule.
The credit value of the doctoral thesis preparation is set according to article 8, paragraph 3 of Study and Examination Regulations to 60 % of the minimal credit value of the study.
During the course of their studies, students are obliged to demonstrate competence in the academic and field related English or another world language which is usually used in the programme or field. This competence is certified through one of the following ways: passing the respective subject (JA003), receiving credits for the publication in a foreign language written for a journal or collection or receiving credits for giving a presentation in a foreign language in a professional forum followed by a discussion.

The state doctoral examination in the study programme of Genomics and Proteomics consists of three partial areas, set up by the doctoral studies board in agreement with a supervisor, based on the doctoral thesis topic and general content of the field subject.
During the oral examination, candidates have to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge within the given area. Students elaborate the topic in the form of a short presentation followed by an expert debate.
Formal rules for the doctoral thesis elaboration follow the Dean’s Measure No. 5/2014 (http://www.sci.muni.cz/NW/predpisy/od/OD-2014-05.pdf). The extent of the thesis is not strictly defined and it depends upon the way of elaboration either by means of traditionally divided work or by the collection of commented publications. The topics are approved by the doctoral studies board. The supervisor is usually a member of the academic staff - associated or full professor, or an expert in the field approved by the Scientific Board of the Faculty. The doctoral thesis defence follows the fulfilment of all credit duties. It is possible to pass the theoretical part of the state doctoral examination after acquiring a set amount of credits, usually 75 %. Students present their thesis and main results before the nominated expert committee, whereupon follows the reading of reports of the supervisor and readers or external examiners, accompanied by the debate on themes brought by them. Then, general discussion follows. The expert committee examines the student's ability to accomplish the given task, and to clearly and concisely explain the solution and defend it in discussion.
