After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• use spoken and written French at the B2+ level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (communication competency);
• categorise basic theoretical knowledge and apply practical skills in phonetics, morphology, syntax and vocabulary (linguistic competency);
• compare their own cultural and historical context with that of francophone countries and choose suitable strategies for contacting representatives of these cultures (socio-cultural competency);
• interpret the main literary styles and genres of French and francophone literature in the wider framework with a historical and cultural context, and use correct literary theory terminology (literary sciences competency);
• apply both theoretical and practical skills in the educational environment by using the basic methods gained from the French Language Didactic module (didactic competency);
• further develop the above mentioned competencies in specialised disciplines within MSc degree studies.

The graduates of this study programme are able to find employment in an education environment; have acquired basic professional knowledge with didactic components and are ready to apply for the follow-up MSc degree Teaching French at Primary and Lower Secondary School Level (single subject programme). In accordance with the §20 regulation no. 563/2004 (educational staff), they can work as teaching assistants, after-school and adult learning programme instructors, language school instructors, halls of residence instructors as well as in various public institutions which provide educational activities.

The standard duration of this programme is six semesters.

This Bachelor's degree course consists of three groups of subjects - specialist subjects, teaching methods and foundation subjects compulsory for all programmes and courses at the Masaryk University (eg languages, physical education, thesis preparation). Students must acquire 180 credits in compulsory, selective and optional subjects.

Chosen programme - 110 credits (in the case of double subject programmes, it is 55 credits for each subject. Students chose subjects from the most recent catalogue of subjects available at the MU)

Teaching methods - 45 credits

Faculty of Education, Masaryk University core subjects - 25 credits (compulsory physical education, thesis preparation and optional subjects available across the whole University)

Practical training is an obligatory part of the curriculum for this field. Work experience programmes are carried out in accordance with the Guidelines for Educating Future Teachers. Their system is optimised to develop students' professional competencies and prepare them for undertaking the full responsibilities of a teaching assistant. Since 2016, even more emphasis has been placed on work experience and practical training and they start in both the general pedagogical and psychological module and the specialised subject at the BSc course level.

The final state examination for the undergraduate course French Language with a view for Education consists of three parts - written, oral, and thesis presentation and defence (if part of this course). The written part tests knowledge of French grammar as learned in the linguistic subjects and the ability to understand written text on B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Another part of the test is a written essay on a given theme (200 words). The oral part tests students' knowledge with three randomly picked questions. These cover 1) linguistics (phonetics, morphology and syntax); 2) literature and history; 3) fundamental didactic methods. Both the actual knowledge and its presentation are observed and marked. Students have to pass all parts of the examination. If a student fails any part (F grade), they will have to undertake the whole examination again.

If a student's bachelor degree thesis is directly related to this course, the thesis and its defence is also part of the examination. The rules for writing a bachelor thesis follow the Course Standards for Theses for the Departments of English, French, German and Russian languages and literature and further specifications for students of the Department of French language and literature. After completion of the Bachelor's degree, it is possible to continue further studies on any Master's degree program (after satisfying the admission requirements). At the Faculty of Education, MU, students can apply for admission to a follow-up Master's degree in Teaching French at Primary and Lower Secondary School Level (both as single or double subject courses). The single subject course is also taken in a combined form.
