The Bachelor’s degree study programme in Italian Language and Literature starts the path to the acquisition of basic knowledge and competence in Italian linguistics and in the history, literature, and culture of Italy. In the course of their studies, students adopt the terminology and basic methodological approaches of linguistics and literary theory. Enrolling students will have language mastery at the A1 level and graduates will have language mastery at the C1 level according to the CEFR.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • speak and write in Italian at the C1 level according to the CEFR
  • have good knowledge of the social, political, and cultural situations in Italy

In addition to working in the fields of translating, interpreting, editing, journalism, tourism, business, and lower-level and middle management, they are well-suited for any profession that demands the ability to think independently and critically and express themselves in both their mother tongue and Italian.

The standard duration of studies is three years, degree conferred: Bachelor’s (Bc.)

Major and minor studies are identical in the corpus of type A/compulsory subjects. The difference is in the range of type B/selective and type C/elective subjects. In the major studies, the amount of subject studies is larger, in particular for preparatory courses toward another Romance language, so that students can acquire required elective credits in other romance fields.

For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 180 ECTS credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. Type A/required courses form the basis of the discipline. Type B/selective and type C/elective courses can be earned in the field of French language and literature, in other Romance disciplines, or in other fields taught at Masaryk University.

During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

The final state examination consists of: 1) the thesis defence (in major studies); 2) a written exam intended to verify skills and knowledge of the language; and 3) a two-part oral exam, one part testing and checking linguistic knowledge and understanding of phonetics and phonology, morphology, and lexicology with a focus on language standards, and one part checking cultural and literary knowledge of Italy.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree study programme may continue with a Master’s degree study programme in Italian language and literature and upper secondary school teacher training in Italian language and literature.
