The study programme of Mathematics is intended for students with a deep interest in mathematics. It provides not only knowledge of basic mathematical concepts and methods, but also develops logical and abstract thinking in order to prepare students for the follow-up studies in the Master's degree programmes. The study of basic mathematical courses is supplemented with elective courses which form the particular profile of the graduate.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- explain fundamental results in the main branches of mathematics, namely mathematical analysis, statistics, algebra, and geometry
- present an overview of applications of mathematics and statistics in other branches of science
The Bachelor's degree programme of Mathematics is a general programme focusing on the preparation of applicants for the studies in the follow-up Master's degree programmes; however, it enables also a direct application in real life as the graduates may use their knowledge of the area of financial and insurance mathematics or computer science.
The standard duration of studies is six semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must earn a total of 180 ECTS credits for required, selective, and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and make up 122 credits (including credits for courses focusing on the preparation of the Bachelor's thesis, and credits for an English language examination). Out of the selected courses, which make up 22 credits in total, students choose according to their interests and intended professional specialization. The remaining 36 credits can be earned in optional courses offered in the given study programme, or in other courses offered by any other study programme. During the course of their studies students should follow the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Course Catalogues through the faculty website.
The main aim of the final state examination is to show that the graduates are able to actively participate in a scientific debate. The state examination consists of two independent parts.
The first part is the defence of the Bachelor's thesis whose length should be between 20 and 40 pages. Basic criteria for the evaluation of the thesis are understanding of the topic of the thesis and quality of the presentation. The second part of the final state examination is an oral exam; the students answer two questions from the list specified on the department's website: http://www.math.muni.cz/pro-studenty/studium-bakalarske-studium/322-okruhy-szz-bc-obecna-matematika.html. In this part students demonstrate the general knowledge of fundamental terms and results in the main branches of mathematics and their relations.
The graduates are well prepared to continue their studies in the follow-up Master’s degree programme of Mathematics. After supplementing the necessary specific knowledge they can continue their studies in other branches related especially to the computer science, finance, or economy.
