The study programme of Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Methods focuses on the studies of mathematical modelling of real processes including methods of their numerical implementation. Students can choose a narrow specialization - the specific parts of applied mathematics - in accordance with the topic of their Master's theses. The aim of the studies is to acquaint students with basic methods of mathematical modelling, and give them a comprehensive survey of numerical methods. In addition to the wider basic knowledge, the graduates will have a deeper knowledge of the research branch connected to their Master's theses.


After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • formulate and solve particular problems in an independent and creative way
  • demonstrate a good overview of numerical methods and basic techniques used in mathematical modelling
  • offer conceptual solutions of real life events modelling in interdisciplinary branches including the creation the particular model, its algorithm development, numerical processing, and computer implementation

The course graduates are qualified for basic and applied research, for managerial professions, and for all spheres where both theoretical and practical knowledge of mathematics is required. They can find employment in institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, at universities, and in institutions using applied mathematical methods.


The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective, and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and make up 63 credits; they are divided into three blocks - basic (31 credits), Master's thesis (30 credits), and language training (2 credits). Out of the elective courses, which make up 15 credits in total, students choose according to their interests and intended professional specialization. The remaining 42 credits can be earned in optional courses offered in the study plan of the given study programme, or in other courses offered in any other study programme.

During the course of their studies students should follow the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Course Catalogues through the faculty website.


The final state examination consists of the Master's thesis defence and the oral examination.

In the thesis defence, the understanding of the topic and level of presentation are evaluated. The oral examination intends to verify that the students are able to discuss problems at a certain professional level, and have an overall view of the fundamental concepts and results of distinct branches of the study programme, and of the connections between them.

After completion of the Master's studies, it is possible to progress to any branch of the doctoral degree programme of Mathematics (after satisfying the admission requirements).
