Bachelor's degree programme, full-time study mode, double-subject, Czech, 3 years
Expand all the items

This study programme is a three year double-subject study, finished with a Bachelor's final examination in both chosen study subjects and the defence of a Bachelor's thesis in one of the study subjects. This study programme prepares university educated specialists who have firm foundations in general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and biochemistry. Lectures in mathematics and physics are an integral part of the syllabus. Graduates are also educated in pedagogical and psychological disciplines and didactics (philosophy, psychology, pedagogy and general didactics). To be fully qualified as a teacher, further Master's degree study is required.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • carry out chemical experiments
  • analyze experimental results using instrumental methods
  • use chemical information sources to find relevant information
  • safely handle chemical compounds
  • understand environmental aspects of chemical research and production
  • understand and follow ethical guidelines of scientific work
  • comprehend psychological and pedagogical issues in education
(?)

Graduates are not fully qualified high school teachers. However, they can work as teachers' assistants at elementary schools and secondary schools, conducting specialized seminars for talented students, preparatory classes for scientific competitions and olympiads, and seminars for university entrance examinations. Owing to their theoretical and laboratory skills in chemistry, the graduates may also find a job in research organizations and analytical laboratories.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 180 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. Required courses and credits are equally balanced between both studied subjects. A fraction of the required credits is earned for courses in pedagogy and psychology and for practical training. A Bachelor's thesis topic is chosen in one of the study fields. Students may find the exact numbers of the required, selective and elective courses and recommended study plans in the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation.

(?)

Practical training at one of the cooperating Brno high schools is an obligatory part of the curriculum. The training consists of short presentations, sitting in on classes, and participation in the school operation.

(?)

The final state examination consists of a written test in chemistry, which examines the students' knowledge of five elementary chemistry disciplines, namely general and physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry. Provided the student has chosen a subject of their Bachelor's thesis within the field of chemistry, the defence of the thesis is a part of the final state examination.

(?)

For the full teacher's qualification it is necessary to enrol in the Master's study programme Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in Chemistry.
