The Bachelor’s degree programme in Applied Biochemistry is intended to equip graduates with the up-to-date skills required for immediate practice, while offering the possibility of continued studies in the related Master’s programme. The study is oriented on three specialisations – Clinical Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Bioanalytical Chemistry (after the first year) according to students’ preferences.

(?)

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • design and carry out experiments in Clinical Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Bioanalytical Chemistry
  • apply the modern biochemical methods to solve problems in their specializations - Clinical Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Bioanalytical Chemistry
  • apply their mathematical and statistical skills to evaluate the performed experiments
  • elaborate the results of their experiments in the professional publications – protocols, theses, articles, etc.
  • apply their language skills (especially English) in the study of the literature and in the evaluation of the results
(?)

The wider theoretical base allows graduates in Applied Biochemistry to be flexible within the new work area and to learn the methods and procedures used there. They are qualified to further develop and specialize in the fields of analytical chemistry, biochemistry or in biochemical processes. They can work in research and development or find employment in a variety of sectors, such as business, management and pharmaceutical industry.

The standard duration of the Bachelor’s study programme is six semesters. To get admitted to the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 180 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. The required common courses comprising mathematical, physical, chemical and biological disciplines and the selective courses make up 149 credits in total (including the Bachelor’s thesis seminars and writing a Bachelor’s thesis). Another 31 credits are awarded to students according to their customized study plans. Students are obliged to pass an examination in English for Specific Purposes at the B1 level and accomplish a physical training course.

The studies are accomplished by a final state examination which consists of two separately rated parts - the defence of the Bachelor’s thesis and an oral examination. During the oral examination, students handle the questions from biochemistry and biochemical methods (compulsory part), then they choose one topic from inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry or molecular biology.

More information about graduation requirements can be found on the department's website: http://orion.sci.muni.cz/student.htm (the page is only in Czech).

Although this Bachelor’s study programme of Applied Biochemistry is intended to equip graduates with the up-to-date skills required for immediate practice, they can continue in any follow-up Master’s study programme of Biochemistry - Biochemistry, Analytical Biochemistry, Biomolecular Chemistry, Genomics a Proteomics and especially Bioanalytics – gaining the qualification for the laboratory work, in clinical laboratories of different hospital types (in accordance with national legislation law No.96/2004 Sb., § 26).
