The two-year study programme of Geology prepares highly educated specialists in geological branches, such as environmental geology, geophysics, geochemistry, historical geology, hydrogeology, mineralogy, magmatic and metamorphic petrology, paleontology, quarternary geology and karsology, regional geology, sedimentary geology, soil mechanics and tectonics. During their studies, students specialize in three chosen branches where they deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • formulate and solve particular problems in an independent and creative way
  • explain and use basic geological terminology in logical context and deduce new information
  • recognize principal minerals, rocks, fossils and structures, interpret these products of nature from the geological point of view, select methods for instrumental analysis
  • use geological research methods including documentation of geological outcrops and exposures, sampling, data processing, etc., choose the best problem solving methods
  • solve complex geological problems, interpret results of the research in relation to other contexts, present the results in written and oral forms
(?)

Graduates can find jobs in basic or applied research - at universities, companies, specialized laboratories, environmental institutions, state management, etc. They can work independently and solve complex problems.

The standard duration of the study is four semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 120 credits for required, selective and elective courses. The required courses cover one third of all the credits including the thesis preparation and thesis defence. Students choose selective courses according to the requirements of the subjects of the final state examination. These courses make up about one third of all the credits.

The remaining part of the credits can be obtained from any elective courses. During the course of their studies, students should follow the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Course Catalogues through the faculty website.

(?)

Practical training depends on the choice of subjects students enrolled for.

(?)

The final state examination consists of a knowledge examination and thesis defence. The former is composed of four subjects, one general and three based on student’s specialization.

(?)

Students can pursue their studies in any follow-up doctoral degree programmes.
