The study programme of Geographic Cartography and Geoinformatics provides theoretical and practical knowledge and skills for the preparation of topographic and thematic maps, collection, analysis, elaboration, interpretation, and visualization of geographical (spatial) data, information, and knowledge. The aim is to prepare graduates for the basic and applied research and other practical activities so that they are able to solve partial tasks related to the processing and interpretation of spatial data, applications, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing (RS), and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and also the creation of digital and analogue thematic maps in the era of Big Data.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • use basic geographical knowledge from physical and human geography, methods and techniques of the elaboration of geographical data, including GIS and methods of cartographic presentation of data
  • work with literature and digital information sources
  • design, work with, and use analogue and digital maps
  • show a general ability to use GIS and remote sensing techniques
  • manage working communication with people, manage such working (research) teams
  • actively use professional terminology in foreign language
  • do independent field work and obtain documentation
  • effectively apply statistical methods, computers, and information technologies for the analysis of geographical reality
  • analyse and synthesize individual components of natural environment
  • formulate basic problems in the system of natural environment - human society in selected regions
  • critically evaluate knowledge related to phenomena, processes, and interrelations in landscape
  • solve particular problems independently, cooperate with professionals from related sciences dealing with environment and landscape
  • organize communication with a non-geographical community
  • adapt in their own work to changing needs of society and practice

Course graduates are qualified for basic and applied research and practice. They can find employment in the managerial professions and other jobs for which they need to combine knowledge of the area with specific practical procedures and applications. The graduate profile ensures an effective combination of advanced information literacy along with the expertise in a wide range of geographical disciplines.

The graduates therefore find employment both in the state and public administration, such as the cadastral and land offices, departments of regional development and environment, organizations using and processing spatial data, information, and knowledge, such as transportation, utilities, healthcare, environment, crisis management, and also in the private sector, particularly in companies providing collection, processing, interpretation, and projection of spatial data, as well as providing services in the field of integration of various kinds of data from spatial and non-spatial data sources.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must earn a total of 180 ECTS credits for required, selective, and elective courses.

During the course of their studies students should follow the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Course Catalogues through the faculty website.

(?)

The final state examination consists of two parts:

- defence of the thesis,

- oral and written examination.

(?)

This study programme also prepares graduates for further studies in the Master's degree programme of Geography and Cartography, and allow them a qualified selection of their future specialization through one of the disciplines of the follow-up Master's degree programme of Geography and Cartography. The graduates prepare for the appropriate selection of the follow-up programme during their studies in the Bachelor's degree programmes by choosing specialized elective courses or their coherent blocks within the study programmes or specializations.
