The aim of the study of Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in French Language and Literature is to prepare qualified and competent teachers of French language and literature who are comprehensively educated for teaching at secondary schools where French is taught as a foreign language.

Input language competence is at the C1 level according to the CEFR; output language competence is at the C2 level.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • produce dignified written and oral expression in French at the C2 level according to the CEFR
  • use detailed knowledge of social, political, cultural, literary, and linguistic situations in France and other French-speaking countries
  • plan, prepare, analyse, and evaluate the teaching of French in high school, including the management and evaluation of pedagogical practice of students on the type of school

Graduates find positions at secondary schools of various types and orientations as well as in special language schools where French as a foreign language is taught.

The standard length of studies is four semesters, concluding with a Master’s degree (Mgr.). To sit for the final state examination, students must earn a total of 120 credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective subjects.

Major and minor studies are identical in the corpus of type A/required subjects. The difference is in the range of type B/selective subjects. In the major, the amount of subject studies is larger, in particular for preparatory courses toward another Romance language, so that students can acquire required optional credits in other Romance fields.

To access the final state exam, students must obtain a total of 120 credits for compulsory, compulsory optional and optional subjects.

Type A/required courses form the basis of the discipline. Their proportion is 20 credits in the common pedagogical-psychological and 62 credits for the major study programme and 56 credits in the minor study programme in didactics, linguistics, and literature.

Type B/selective and type C/elective credits can be earned in the field of School Teacher Training in French Language and Literature, in other Romance disciplines, or in other fields taught at Masaryk University.

All students are obliged to attend at least one course taught in English related to the degree of studies. During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

Students receive a continuous four-week practical training including practicing classroom lessons didactics with a tutor teacher. Feedback reflection is an integral part of didactics.

The final state examination consists of: defence of the thesis and a test of the study programme disciplines, including didactics approbation, which it consists of 1) a final four-hour written essay (depending on the student choice of language and literature focused) which tests student ability to address a professional topic; 2) an oral exam focused on theoretical knowledge and knowledge of the French language and literature and didactics of French; and 3) written exam of pedagogical-psychological subjects.

After completing the Master’s degree study programme, it is possible to continue further studies in a doctoral degree study programme in Romance languages, Romance literatures, or other appropriate doctoral studies.
