Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in History |
In preparing students to teach history in secondary schools, the main objective is for them to consolidate and expand their knowledge of history from the Bachelor’s degree programme, acquire the didactic competence to teach history, develop their ability to deal with educational and psychological situations associated with teaching and the running of a school, and develop diagnostic and specialist pedagogical skills linked with the need for an individual and differentiated approach to pupils/students.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- understand the basic methodological approaches to history and be familiar with academic literature
- analyse historical phenomena and processes and explain the significance of individual historical processes, events, and epochs and their influence on the subsequent development of society
- communicate their knowledge of the subject to pupils/students in accordance with the school’s education programme using modern didactic methodology
- manage the educational process, motivate and communicate with students, and contribute to the running of the school
Graduates from the secondary-school teaching study programme will principally work as teachers of history (as a subject) at secondary schools (grammar schools and secondary vocational schools) and can also teach at primary schools.
The full-time Master’s degree study programme for secondary-school history teaching is aimed at graduates of the Bachelor’s degree course in history at Masaryk University’s Faculty of Arts, as well as graduates in history and related subjects from other universities. It is designed as a single-subject or double-subject degree course, at the end of which students sit the Master’s degree final state examination.
In order to successfully complete the Master’s degree study programme, students must take courses in education and psychology which are taught by the Department of Educational Sciences and the Department of Psychology (Psychology for Teachers, Teaching in Schools, School Didactics, Special Education, and Educational Diagnostics) as well as the specialist history courses.
The programme is specialized, which means that students choose one of the specializations on offer: Medieval History; History of the Early Modern Age; 19th and 20th Century History; International Relations and European Studies; Religious History; or Modern History and the Multicultural Society; lectures and seminars on specific historical issues will help students to expand on the basic knowledge acquired during the Bachelor’s degree study programme and convey to the Master’s degree the basic principles of specialist historical research.
To complete the programme, students must earn at least 120 credits as follows: 1) 34 credits for the education/psychology disciplines, 4 credits for a foreign language and 82 credits for the specialist subjects (for the single-subject degree); 2) 34 credits for the education/psychology disciplines, 4 credits for a foreign language and 48/28 credits for the specialist subjects (double-subject dissertation/non-dissertation degree).
Students in the dissertation programme are required to submit and defend a dissertation. Students can choose either education/psychology topics or history topics (in which case the dissertation must be didactic in nature).
Practical training is an obligatory part of the study programme.
The final state examination is made up of three parts: 1) a viva or defence of the dissertation; 2) an exam in the specialist subject and the didactics of history teaching; and 3) a written exam in the education/psychology subjects and school didactics (including topics which are covered by these subjects: Psychology for Teachers, Teaching in Schools, School Didactics, Special Education and Educational Diagnostics)
After completing the Master’s degree study programme, it is possible to continue further studies in a doctoral degree study programme in Czech history, general history, or related subjects.
