The Master’s Teaching Degree in Pedagogy for Secondary Schools study programme is presented within the Teaching Degrees for Secondary Schools programmes offered by the Department of Educational Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. It is conceived as a four-semester Master’s degree programme.
In line with the educational programme and the nature of the Master’s study programme, the Teaching Degree in Pedagogy for Secondary Schools focuses on the following areas:
Theory and methodology: The goal is to provide students with expertise and theoretical knowledge as well as skills in domains important for performing the teaching profession such as research in social and educational phenomena, an overview of school policies issues, knowledge of systems of formal education (home and abroad), knowledge and skills in special pedagogy and diagnostics, an overview of approaches to school management and pedagogical evaluation etc.;
Pedagogy and psychology: The goal is to acquaint students comprehensively with issues in social pedagogy, general didactics, participants in education, as well as the major topics in psychology of education such as learning processes, pupil/student personality, teacher personality psychology, and many others;
Pedagogy and didactics: The focus is on development of professional, social, and personal competences. Students focus specifically on teaching pedagogy at secondary schools including pedagogical record-keeping, communication with parents and colleagues, etc.
Practical training is an inseparable part of the study and its culmination. The practical training involves exposure to the classroom as well as getting acquainted with and sometimes even participating in different school activities (such as taking part in school library management under supervision, helping organize practical training and/or leisure-time activities, attending teaching staff meetings where possible, etc.). In this way, students are able to apply all knowledge and skills acquired throughout their study. The practical training also includes feedback from the supervisor – one of the key components of the practical training and a climax of the study in the degree programme. The practical training module is supported with passive participation in classes as a part of the courses in didactics.
The study programme is concluded with the defence of the diploma thesis and by a final state examination.
The graduates (or students) of the Master’s Teaching Degree in Pedagogy can carry on to study the qualification programme in Counselling for Education or the Degree Programme in Educational Management, which are also offered at the Department of Educational Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University.
