The goal of the study is to provide students with theoretical and experimental basics of plasma physics. Modern vacuum technology, circuit and microwave electronics are also part of the study. Graduates master theoretical and experimental aspects of plasma physics, plasma diagnostics, vacuum physics and technology. Diagnostics methods include mainly optical and mass spectrometry, and probe and microwave diagnostics. Graduates also acquire the knowledge of modern methods of plasma and plasma chemical treatment of surfaces (plastics, textile, etc), deposition of thin films of hard, superhard and polymer materials and contemporary methods of thin film characterisation. They know the statistical methods of experimental data processing and the aspects of computer-controlled laboratory experiments. With regard to the character of the study the graduate has also the hardware knowledge.


After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • design and perform experiments in plasma physics and plasma chemistry
  • analyse experimental results and adjust the experimental set-up accordingly
  • have firm knowledge of a variety of physical and diagnostics methods
  • operate the instruments and evaluate and interpret the results
  • identify and solve physical problems in various areas of science and production
  • show the awareness of environmental aspects of the research and production
  • understand and follow ethical guidelines of scientific work.

Graduates of this study field will be ready to work in academic research, as well as in research and development of a technological character in industry companies.


The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses.

During the course of their studies students should follow the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation and MU Study and Examination Regulations. They can access the Course Catalogues through the faculty website.


The final state examination consists of two parts:

- the defence of a Master's thesis,

- an oral exam.


After completion of the Master's studies, it is possible to continue further studies in a follow-up doctoral degree programme (after satisfying the admission requirements). At the Faculty of Science students can apply for admission to a follow-up doctoral degree in Plasma Physics.
