Studies in this field present musical education as a discipline that tries to mediate the values of the Czech and world classical music in today's mass culture and thus continues in the tradition of the Czech cantors. The profile of a graduate is a universally musically educated and socially useful personality. It emphasizes acquiring both theoretical and practical skills. The study represents its field as a discipline that can maximally use the latest information technologies. The study is generally focused on creating professional, pedagogical, psychological, communicational and other personal competences as an initial stage to the follow-up Master’s study Teacher of Music Education for Secondary Schools. Knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired during the studies are the basis of the ability to practice the profession of teaching assistant for music teachers and educational and auxiliary educational work. The acquired competencies give also a full qualification for the work of an instructor in free-time centres.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • acquire a broad knowledge of music theory, music history, music sociology and ethnomusicology
  • use the skills in practical disciplines (playing an instrument, voice training, choir conducting)
  • use the basic skills of the information systems like music notography and basic sound processing
  • acquire a knowledge about education and content of educational topics related to the content of the field, which can be employed in the conceptions and implementations of extra-curricular and leisure activities

Graduates are fully qualified as a teacher's assistant, instructor in free-time centres, as an educator in youth centres, educator in after-school clubs, and in various civic associations involved in educational activities.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. For admittance to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 180 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline. Out of the optional courses students choose according to their interests and intended professional specialization. For all students there is an obligation to complete at least one course taught in English from the ones on offer at the department for the given level of studies.

During the course of their studies students should follow the "Study catalogue" for their year of matriculation. They can access the "Study catalogues" through the faculty website.

Practical training accompanied by supervision is an obligatory part of the curriculum for this field. Within this Bachelor’s degree, students pass through Assistant Teaching Practice I and II of Assistant Practice – Teacher’s assistant I and II in the third and fourth semesters. For reflection on teaching practice there are two seminars - Self-experiential preparation for the profession I and II, also both in the third and fourth semesters. The assistant practice and seminars are implemented in cooperation with the Department of Education.

The state final examination consists of a theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part, students demonstrate their acquired knowledge in music history, harmony, musical forms and music didactics (concept of activities). In the practical part, students demonstate their abilities in piano or violin playing, singing and choir conducting.

The graduate of the Bachelor's degree in a combination of fields of study with a focus on education can continue in the Master's studies in the Teacher Training for Secondary Schools programme.
