The study programme forms a part of double-subject studies, and constitutes the first level of the university studies leading to a teaching qualification for secondary schools. It provides general geographical education which is supplemented with the cartographic education.

The expected objective is to prepare graduates for studies in the Master's study programme of Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in Geography and Cartography, but since the graduates obtain comprehensive geographical and cartographic education and the basics of pedagogy, methodology and psychology, they can find direct application in practice outside the area of education.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • understand and explain the physical geographical and social geographical phenomena and processes
  • master the fundamentals of geographical cartography and geoinformatics
  • use the methods and techniques of processing geographical data, including GIS and cartographic data presentation methods
  • apply basic ideas and concepts of general didactics, pedagogy, and psychology
  • study applied parts of these disciplines in the Master’s degree programme

The graduates are prepared primarily to progress to the Master's degree programme. Although not fully qualified as teachers, their education is clearly useful for activities aiming at the general public, and may be applied at secondary and primary schools through conducting specialized seminars for gifted students, and preparation of these students for the Olympiads, competitions, and entrance examinations to colleges.

The standard duration of the studies is six semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective, and elective courses. In the study programme of Geography and Cartography with a view to Education students must obtain 72 credits for required courses; a common part of the double-subject course is 12 required credits for the elementary pedagogical-psychological training, and 2 credits for the practical training. The students choose Bachelor's theses in one field only, and earn 10 credits for it.

The students follow the Course Catalogue of their matriculation year and the Masaryk University Study and Examination Regulations:

The graduate students are required to complete practical training as assistants at one of the selected secondary schools in Brno. Practical training includes also short presentations, sitting in on classes, and contributions to the running of the school.

(?)

The studies are completed with the state final Bachelor's board examination. The state final examination consists of a written examination (http://geogr.muni.cz/okruhy-bakalarske-zkousky#zaklady).

If a student has chosen the Bachelor's thesis in geography, it is a part of the final state examination together with the defence. The defence of the Bachelor's thesis is a discussion during which the candidate introduces the subject of work, solved problems, methods used, and results obtained. They respond to comments contained in the assessments of the supervisor and external examiners, express their opinions concerning the apriori topics in the discussion, and answer questions raised during the defence.

Provided that the degree programme is a part of a double-subject course, the students must take the state final examination also in the second study programme.

(?)

The graduate has a general knowledge of basic geographical and cartographic disciplines, which provides a solid foundation for the directly related study programme of 7504T056 UZ - Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in Geography and Cartography. After the graduation (in combination with another discipline), the graduates become fully qualified secondary school teachers.
