Molecular Biology and Genetics is a Bachelor’s study programme that aims to extend theoretical and practical skills of modern biology for molecular and cellular biology and general as well as special genetics. The basis of the field is the description of the structure and function of living material on molecular, cellular, tissues, organ, organismal and population levels in the courses such as Cellular and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Anatomy, Histology, Plant and Animal Physiology, Microbiology and Immunology. An integral part of the education are also supporting biological study programmes, such as Plant and Animal Systems and Evolution, and chemical disciplines including the practical courses, such as Inorganic, Organic, Analytical and Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Mathematics.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • master the knowledge and skills in basic biological disciplines (general biology, genetics, molecular biology, anthropology, microbiology, immunology, biostatistics, physiology of organisms)
  • master the knowledge and skills in biochemistry and chemistry (general biochemistry, enzymology, biochemics methods, inorganic and organic chemistry)
  • use the knowledge of the structure and functions of a genome on all basic levels of a living system (virus genome, bacterial genome, eukaryotic genome)
  • perform practical methods in molecular biology and in genetic disciplines

Although most of the students are supposed to continue in a Master’s study programme, Bachelor graduates are well educated for practical work. They can get a job in agriculture, veterinary medicine and food industry institutions. They can well participate in the laboratory work in research, development, especially in the introduction of new methods, innovations and routine work in the field of molecular genetics, including the assessment of the results. However, they are not qualified for independent research work. The aim of the study is to provide graduates with skills necessary either for performing practical work within the field of modern experimental biology or further education in the field of molecular biology and genetics.

The standard duration of the study is six semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 180 credits for required, selective and elective courses. Required and elective courses form the basis of specialized courses with a total amount of 160 credits (including credits for courses aimed at preparing the thesis). Students choose electives according to their interests and according to their future professional orientation. These courses can be selected from the current elective offer in the field or from the offer of other disciplines. Students follow the recommended study plan published in the Study Catalogue for their year of matriculation. Access to all the Study Catalogues can be found on the website of the faculty.

Practice is not a mandatory part of the study.

The final state examination consists of a Bachelor’s thesis defence and of a written examination.

The Bachelor’s thesis topics come from the fields of molecular biology and genetics. Students choose the topics in the fourth semester or at the beginning of the 5th semester of their studies. They can also choose the topics according to their own interest. The work has the character of literary research (bibliographic search), more detailed information about its structure and scope can be obtained on the website of OGMB http://www.sci.muni.cz/UEB/OGMB/.

The written part of the Bachelor’s examination tests students' knowledge of the subjects of Molecular Biology and General Genetics. More detailed information on the requirements for the final state examination is available at the website of the Institute of Experimental Biology (http://www.sci.muni.cz / UEB / OGMB).

The basic aim of the study programme is to prepare graduates to continue their studies in Master's study programmes, especially in the Master's study programme of Molecular Biology and Genetics.
