The standard duration of the study is six semesters. The study program may be taken only in combination with some other study field. In order for the student to be admitted to the Final State Examination, he or she must obtain 90 ECTS in the field of BSS. If the study is combined with Political Science, the student must obtain 58 or 52 ECTS from a total of 90 ECTS in required courses; these figures result from whether at the end of the bachelor's degree the student writes a bachelor thesis (Diploma Thesis Seminar 6 ECTS) within BSS or within the second field of study. If the study is combined with other study fields, the student must obtain 62 or 56 ECTS from a total of 90 ECTS in required courses; these figures result from whether at the end of the bachelor's degree the student writes a bachelor thesis (Diploma Thesis Seminar 6 ECTS) within BSS or within the second field of study. Of the remaining 28 or 34 ECTS for elective courses necessary to achieve the required total of 90 ECTS, 5 ECTS can be acquired by completing optional courses outside the study field. ECTS obtained for completing the minimal language competence and for physical education are included in the optional courses.

The Final State Examination consists of the thesis defense (if the student does not submit a thesis in another field of study) and the two subjects of the Final State Examinations (Theory and Methods of Security and Strategic Studies and Security Policy). Students have the areas of topics in advance; the particular questions within the FSE match these areas. These areas are related to the required courses and the assigned literature. In the case of the bachelor exam, students will receive five questions from each subject, from which they must answer four. The defense of the bachelor thesis is a part of the Final State Examination.
