After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• understand, differentiate, and explain the main theories of art and culture from historical and contemporary points of view, and know the leading paradigms in cultural theory
• produce dignified written and oral communication in the fields of arts, literature, and culture
• have detailed knowledge of cultural identities and art history up to the present, including knowledge of aesthetic values, norms, and functions in the modern global world
• enter professions that demand independent and well-educated thinking and writing
• conduct research of their own into the theory of art and the history of culture and civilization

An education of this kind qualifies the graduate for highly responsible work in the public and private administration of culture, in journalism, public relations, and editorship, in criticism and management, in translation and interpretation, in advertisement and performing arts (theatre, TV, media, interactive media), in the preservation of cultural heritage, and in the sphere of public relations and cultural exchange in the European integration processes.

The standard duration of studies is four semesters. For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for type A/required, type B/selective and type C/elective courses.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. For admittance to the final state examination students must earn a total of 180 ECTS credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. Type A/required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and make up 87 credits (including credits for courses focused on writing a Master’s thesis). Out of the type B/selective courses, which make up 83 credits in total, students choose according to their interests and intended professional specialization. The remaining 15 credits are to be earned for the submitted diploma thesis and the diploma seminar. The Master’s degree study programme in aesthetics and culture studies requires an obligatory praxis in cultural institutions for a period of full two weeks (80 hours). The students write a detailed report and share their experiences with colleagues in a study group.

In addition, practical training is involved in the courses ESB089 Computational Editing and Presenting (30 hours) and ESB063 Public Relations and Rhetorics in Praxis (30 hours). Those courses are optional.

The Master’s degree final state examination has two parts: the defence of the thesis and the examination in the following three subject areas. 1) History of Aesthetics, Czech Aesthetics and Structuralism; 2) Concepts, Methods, Analytical Aesthetics; and 3) European Culture Studies and Present Day Challenges.

After completion of the Master’s degree study programme, it is possible to continue further studies in the doctoral programme in aesthetics after satisfying the admission requirements. At the Faculty of Arts, students can apply for admission to a doctoral degree study programme in any corresponding programme in the humanities, for which they are prepared and qualified.
