The student gains a comprehensive overview in the field of acquisition and processing of image information, starting with simple image modifications using point transforms or linear filters, and ending up with sophisticated tools such as mathematical morphology or deformable models. Graduates are able to design and coordinate development of software systems for image information processing in research (e.g. research in molecular biology using microscopy imaging techniques), in medicine (e.g. ultrasound imaging, magnetic resonance, CT), as well as in industry (e.g. fingerprint or retina recognition, processing records of security or traffic cameras).

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • understand the principles of digital image processing
  • understand basic as well as advanced data structures for 2D and 3D image handling and analysis
  • choose proper algorithms and asses their computational cost with respect to application area
  • design and implement advanced applications related to image processing
  • use image processing libraries for bulding complex applications

The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To be admitted to take the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and amount to 61 credits (including credits for courses focused on Master's thesis writing). Regarding the semi-optional courses, which amount to at least 36 credits in total, students make their selection according to their interests and intended professional specializations. The remaining 23 credits can be obtained from optional courses offered in the curriculum of the given study programme or from other courses offered by any other study programme.

For all students, there is an obligation to complete all required and chosen semi-optional courses with the highest completion type.

During the course of their studies, students should follow the course catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the course catalogues through the faculty website.

The final state examination consists of a diploma thesis defence and an oral exam aimed at checking the field-related knowledge of the students. There is no written preparation to the exam and the student answers two to three questions asked by the examination committee. The final state examination typically takes about sixty minutes, half of which is taken by the thesis defence and half by the oral exam.
