Analytical Chemistry – Field of study catalogue MU
Analytical Chemistry |
The programme is aimed at preparing highly qualified experts in the field of analytic chemistry based on topical requirements of practising professionals. The study presupposes independently and creatively conducted research activities of experimental nature under the supervision of a specialist. Extensive theoretical knowledge of chemistry gained through completing study plan courses is supplemented with practical experience of modern instrumental methods of analysis. Students are able to critically evaluate knowledge obtained through background reading, independently write articles and research reports in English and teach students of Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes. Doctoral students publish the results of their research in renowned journals and summarize them in doctoral thesis.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- demonstrate a good knowledge of methods of classical and modern analysis of inorganic, organic and biologically significant substances
- respond to variable requirements of practising professionals utilising the obtained experience and theoretical knowledge; develop new analytical methods
- manage the operation of laboratories (including research analytical laboratories) and lead a team of experts
- have a proper understanding of scientific chemical literature and other sources of chemical information
- properly evaluate potential risks and hazards associated with handling dangerous chemical substances and follow safety rules and guidelines
- write a research paper or an article in Czech or in English reporting on the results of their research and present the results using computer technology at scientific fora in the country and abroad
The graduates of the doctoral study programme of Analytical chemistry have an extensive knowledge of all basic branches of chemistry and are able to apply it to solving problems both in academic environment and in industrial settings. In the course of their studies they routinely exploit scientific chemical literature and other information sources for chemistry, broaden their theoretical knowledge and deepen practical skills not only in the area of their own research. The graduates utilise modern methods of spectrometry analysis and separation methods including computer data processing and chemometrics for appropriate evaluation of analyses results and data validation. They are familiar with and able to follow good laboratory practice guidelines.
The graduates find employment at departments of other universities, institutes of the Academy of Sciences and research institutes or companies oriented towards metallurgy, mechanical engineering, geology, geochemistry, glass manufacturing, agrochemistry, clinical research, hygiene, agriculture, veterinary science, food industry, medicine, pharmaceutical industry or ecology. They are flexible in terms of adapting to the needs of other chemistry-oriented work-places when solving complex issues. A full understanding of analytical instrumentation and knowledge of analytical issues across various fields of production, services and health care enable the graduates to find employment in the area of development and production of analytical apparatus as well as their sale and maintenance.
