Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with archaeological sources, basic terminology, archaeological methodology and systematic. The history and organisation of archaeology, the bibliography and ethics of the discipline are presented in general outline.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, student will be able to:
- use the basic archaeological terminology;
- identify the main, auxiliary and related branches of the discipline and types of archaeological sources; - orient oneself in basic methods and history of archaeology;
- find basic specialized literature and use basic citation standards;
- describe the basic ethical principles of the discipline.
Syllabus
  • 1. Subject and object of the studies. Position of archaeology in the system of disciplines. Social significance of archaeology. Current organization of the Czech archaeology.
  • 2. Archaeological sources, their characteristic and classification.
  • 3. An outline of European and Czech archaeology history.
  • 4. Basic historical concepts. The “archaeological culture” phenomenon.
  • 5. Fundamentals of the branch methodology. Method; technique; methodology; methodics.
  • 6. The principle of periodisation of history. Time, dating, and chronology.
  • 7. Expert (destructive and non-destructive) analyses of archaeological relics
  • 8. Methods of handling archaeobotanical material, material conservation, anthropology.
  • 9. Settlement archaeology. 10. Landscape archaeology. Methods of reconstruction of economic life and economy. 11. Funeral archaeology. Methods of reconstruction of social structures. Sources of scientific information. Ethics of scientific work. 12. Methods and sources of medieval research.
