Course objectives
The course deals with the works of Ladislav Fuks, based on his World War II experience, i.e. namely his books Mí černovlasí bratři (My Black-Haired Brothers), Pan Theodor Mundstock (Mr. Theodor Mundstock) and Spalovač mrtvol (The Corpse Burner). The participants will get acquainted with selected works of Ladislav Fuks and their structure.
Syllabus
  • The focus will be on themes such as the evil (above all in connection with the so-called banality of evil - a term coined by H. Arendt), bestiality of some characters, the image of the holocaust in works of L. Fuks etc. We will analyse books by Ladislav Fuks and other authors (Ludvík Aškenazy, Arnošt Lustig) in each of the seminars; the descriptions of the individual seminars will be specified in the introduction to the course with respect to the previous experience of students enrolled. The course will include showing the film Spalovač mrtvol (The Corpse Burner) by Juraj Herz and a subsequent interpretation of the links between the film and literary versions.
