Abstract

The course examines the development of Czech literature from the early 1990s to the present, with a focus on prose, poetry, and drama. Through the analysis of selected works, we will explore how literary production responds to social, political, and cultural transformations over the last few decades. Emphasis will be placed on the formal structures of texts—narrative strategies, linguistic devices, and genre conventions—while also considering their relationship to broader cultural, social, media, and political contexts.

The course aims to enhance students' skills in critical interpretation of literary texts, formal analysis, and situating individual works within the evolving landscape of contemporary Czech culture.

Learning outcomes

The students will be able:
To develop skills in close reading and formal literary analysis.
To understand contemporary Czech literature as a reflection and critique of social, political, and cultural change.
To analyse the interconnectedness of literary form and social content.
To critically engage with secondary sources (critical essays, scholarly studies, reviews, interviews).
To cultivate a deeper, historically and culturally grounded perspective on current trends in Czech fiction, poetry, and drama.

• In these seminars focused on Czech literature after 1945, we will concentrate primarily on close reading, analysis, and interpretation of selected prose works and poetry collections. We will examine formal and narrative techniques, thematic layers of the works, linguistic and compositional strategies, and the ways in which the texts engage with their cultural and historical context.

• Dr. Balaštík's seminar group:
• Dr. Křeček and dr. Záhora's seminar group: The seminar group will focus on the analysis and interpretation of significant Czech poetic, prose and dramatic works after 1989, which represent one of the developmental tendencies of the given period. The social and authorial context and contemporary reception of the works will also be taken into account. Individual meetings will be devoted to the works of awarded authors, such as Bohumil Hrabal, Pavel Kolmačka, Viola Fischerová, Jáchym Topol, Jaroslav Žila, Radek Malý, Marek Šindelka, Klára Goldstein or Jiří Havelka. The seminar group's final program and the detailed conditions for its completion will be specified at the beginning of the semester after mutual agreement with the course participants.
