The course is offered to students of any study field.
Abstract
The course focuses on the development of the student's abilities to understand Czech literary texts and present a reasoned interpretation of them.
Through lecture and discussion a picture should emerge of the specific features of the evolution of Czech literature against the background of Czech cultural history.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- analyse and interpret chosen texts from Czech literature,
- have a good understanding of the Czech literary context of the 20th and 21st centuries,
- compare the development of Czech literature in the 20th and 21st centuries with the development of literature in their own country,
- apply the knowledge gained in the analysis of literary texts.
Key topics
  • First lesson will focus on methods and forms of working with literary texts.
  • Following lessons will focus on the interpretation of excerpts from the texts that the course participants will receive in the first lesson.
  • Texts are naturally selected above all with regard to their literary quality, but also taking into consideration the role which Czech literature often played in history, here in relation to social and political influences.
  • The most space will be devoted to 20th century literature, nevertheless it is not possible to omit more recent phases of development.

Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
Interpretation of selected works of Czech literature which will be subsequently put into context with regard to the literary life and social situation of the given period.
Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
The course is completed with a final examination.
The final examination takes the form of a school essay (up to 5 pages) on a given topic, which course participants write in the last lesson.
Course participant must have 75% active class attendance and give a presentation on a given topic to be allowed to take the final examination. Late arrival to in-person classes or joining an online class late also counts as an absence. Only absence due to illness (backed up by a medical confirmation) does not count.
Active attendance means readiness for teaching (completed homework, having study materials, prepared presentation, etc.) and fulfillment of tasks set by the teacher.
