Course objectives
Course Description: Selected Issues in Japanese Theatre: Theatre Noh: The Classical Lyric Drama of Japan
Syllabus
  • Noh represents a wellspring for traditional Japanese performing arts and, as such, it has had an enormous influence on Kabuki and other arts that developed later in Japan. The origin of Noh comes from 14th century by fusing three genres: narrative songs utai, a form of dance called shimai, and musical accompaniment called hayashi. Noh is classified as a richly symbolic performance. In spite of its archaic character, it still attracts many various spectators. Fundamental aspects of Noh- stage, mask, costume 5. The structure in Noh 6. Ritual in Noh 7. The life of Zeami and his theoretical writings 8. Zeami the theorist in the context of world theatre 9.
