Course objectives
This course examines philosophical concepts of history in history of philosophy and historioghraphy. Students will read and prepare to discuss all of the assigned readings for each lesson (Weekly reading is necessary.). Class participation and active discussions will be an important component of the student´s input. At the end of the course students should be able to orientate in the most important problems of the history of philosophy and understand the historical context.

  • History of philosophy and philosophy of history, meaning of history
  • Methodological reflexions, time and space in mythology, cyclical model of time in antiquity, Aristoteles a Polybios
  • Judaic-Christian koncept of time, Augustinus, Joachim da Fiore
  • Humanistic historiography (Machiavelli, Guicciardini)
  • Mechanism of social events in philosophy of the 16th and 17th centuries (Grotius, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke)
  • Philosophy of history of G. B. Vic, the idea of progress in the Enlightenment
  • Hegel´s philosophy of history, romantic historicism
  • Marxist and positivist conception of history
  • Schopenhauer and Nietzsche and their voluntarism, historicism of philosophy of life and its influence over philosophy of history in 20th century, fenomenological conception of history
  • Conceptions of postindustrialist society and postmodernism
  • Conception of „the end of history“
