Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic grammar and lexicon of classical Latin as taught e.g. in high school or in the courses of Latin for Students of Romance Languages I, II (LJ601 and LJ602).
This course takes place in the second half of the Autumn semester, after the students will have attended the course IJ2A101 Introduction to Vulgar Latin / Úvod do lidové latiny in the first half of the semester.
If you have not passed the exam of Introduction to Vulgar Latin you cannot get the zapocet for History of Italian Language I, nor attend History of Italian Language II (in Spring term).

Course objectives
Knowledge of the history of Italian language from the Origins to the unification of Italy. Part one (Autumn): introduction to the subject and first centuries.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
  • sketch development of Latin in the fields of phonetics, morphology, syntax and lexicon with emphasis on Vulgar and Late Latin;
  • show relation between selected Late Latin evolutionary tendencies and the development of the Romance languages (mainly Italian, and Spanish);
  • explain some basic principles related to the development of language and language changes.
  • Syllabus
    • Vulgar Latin:
    • Introduction.
    • Concepts of Vulgar and Late Latin and their definition.
    • Romanization and the Romance languages.
    • Changes in the vocalic and consonantic systems.
    • Nominal system: changes in declension, gradation of adjectives, changes in pronouns, origin of the article.
    • Theory of grammaticalization.
    • Verbal system: development of new forms (future, perfect), extinction of some classical forms, changes in verbal voice.
    • Syntax: accusative with infinitive, quod clauses, absolute constructions, indirect questions, word order.
    • Lexicon: semantic changes, Greek loan-words.

    Teaching methods
    Lezioni frontali (storia della lingua italiana con lettura critica di testi sia letterari sia pratici; introduzione alla disciplina con focalizzazione su problemi e metodi).
    Assessment methods
    Examination (IJ2A101 Úvod do lidové latiny)
    Written test from both Classical and Vulgar Latin. In the Classical Latin part, the knowledge of basic Latin morphology, selected syntactic phenomena and basic vocabulary will be required (list of required grammar is found in the study materials). In the Vulgar Latin part, questions will focus on topics studied during the course. Students also will be asked to explain simple examples of evolutionary tendencies found in Latin texts. The written test will be completed with a brief oral examination.
