Exam in IJ2A101 Introduction to Vulgar Latin and IJ2A031 History of Italian Language I required.
No exceptions will be granted.

Course objectives
Knowledge of the history of Italian language from the Origins to the unification of Italy.
Part two: from 14th to 19th century.
Learning outcomes
After attending the course the student will have a general knowledge of the development of Italian language along the centuries, with regards to literature as well and to all the theoretical discussions that go under the name of "question of the language"
Syllabus
  • The main topics of the course are as follows:
  • - the linguistic situation in the Italian peninsula after 476 A.D.;
  • from Vulgar Latin to Italian;
  • - the development of the Italian language from its birth in the 9th-10th centuries to the early 16th century;
  • - main periods of the development of Italian;
  • - phonetic, morphological, syntactic and semantic changes;
  • - previous stages of development compared to modern usage (including the Tobler-Mussafia law);
  • - analysis of relevant texts from the Indovinello veronese to Bembo.

Teaching methods
Lectures (history of Italian language with contextualised reading of relevant texts both literary and practical; introduction of the subject focusing on problems and methods).
Assessment methods
Active participation during the entire semester. Homework and presentations. Written test. The exam includes the programme of the course (second half of the Autumn semester, and Spring semester) + a manual such as that of Migliorini or that of Marazzini, and that of Patota for the core part of linguistics. Basic knowledge of Latin language is required.
Attendance is compulsory.
Maximum number of unjustified absences: 1. Late arrival, i.e. when the lecture has already started, will be marked as an absence. Doing other things, not relevant to the subject, during the classes (such as chatting, reading/sending email, surfing the internet, watching films/videos) will also be considered as an absence. Homework which is the result of plagiarism or written with the aid of AI tools may result in non-admission to the exam.
Arriving late at the exam may result in non-admission to the exam.
