Learning outcomes
The outcome is a complete Bachelor’s diploma thesis.
Syllabus
  • As established by the regulations of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, topics of final theses are officially announced twice a year (during the Autumn and the Spring Semester).
  • Important dates associated with thesis registration and submission (valid for each academic year) can be found at:
  • Students can either choose a topic of their Bachelor’s theses from the list of topics offered by the individual supervisors or propose a topic of their own.
  • Before registering for a specific topic, it is necessary that the student consults his/her choice with a potential supervisor in order to specify each other’s ideas and expectations and come up with a basic proposal that will be implemented. It is recommended that the student already brings a written outline of the project to the first consultation. After the student and his/her future supervisor agree on a suitable topic and requirements, the latter confirms the student’s registration for the selected topic in the Topic Lists application for Bachelor’s diploma theses in the Information System (IS MUNI). The student and his/her supervisor together formulate an official Bachelor’s Diploma Thesis Assignment. Thus, the assignment is only written after the topic has already been discussed with – and approved by – the thesis supervisor.
  • The following information has to be entered in the Topic Lists application in the IS: the assigned topic of the Bachelor’s thesis (thesis title in Czech and English); the student’s registration for the topic; the name of the thesis supervisor; the name of the reviewer (“opponent”); the name of the consultant (if applicable), and an official assignment containing a list of basic sources relevant for the thesis topic.
  • Students work on their theses independently, consulting their progress with their thesis supervisors and/or consultants when necessary.
  • The Bachelor’s thesis presents a theoretical or en empirical research study within a minimum of 70,000 characters. Thesis parts that are counted in the required length include the main body of the text, footnotes, endnotes, and the table of contents. Appendices might also be counted if the supervisor finds it suitable. References, title pages, and the declaration of originality are not counted.
  • Two-sided printing may be allowed when both sides of the page are clearly readable (good quality of print and paper, and sufficient margins for binding on both sides).
  • All theses must be submitted in a hardcover inseparable binding that does not allow any subsequent manipulation with the individual pages.
  • Hard copies of Bachelor’s Diploma theses can only be submitted directly to the Secretary of the Dept. of Psychology, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. At the same time, the student has to upload an electronic version to the Thesis Archive in the IS.
  • Both hard and electronic copies are required in order for the thesis to be considered as submitted.
  • For more information, see Dean’s Guidelines no. 3/2015 on state examinations at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University (Směrnice děkana FF MU č. 3/2015 O státních závěrečných zkouškách na Filozofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity):
  • To make sure that the required formal standards are met, students can use the Czech summary of the APA manual for manuscript writing (Manuál pro psaní rukopisů, 2014), available at the Department website, for reference: http://psych.phil.muni.cz/studium/dokumenty
  • For empirical studies, it is recommended that the students follow the standard IMRAD structure for research reporting in their theses: http://psych.phil.muni.cz/media/34721/imrad.pdf
  • Further expectations regarding the final content and structure of a Bachelor’s thesis are specified by each thesis’s supervisor individually.

Assessment methods
The supervisor confirms his/her approval of the student’s thesis by awarding a course credit. The supervisor individually considers the student’s efforts and overall approach to the writing process before awarding the credit. The Bachelor’s thesis itself receives an A-F grade based on the student’s thesis defence, which mainly serves to address the reviews by the thesis reviewer (”opponent”) and the supervisor. The grade is a part of the overall grading of the Bachelor’s State Exam.
