- Abstract
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of stylistics and to develop their ability to work analytically and practically with texts of different functional styles of contemporary Russian.
Students will:
- acquire the basic concepts of stylistics and an overview of the development of the concept of style, text and functional styles in Russian (in comparison with English);
- gain a systematic overview of the functional styles of contemporary Russian and their typical linguistic devices;
- learn to analyse texts in terms of communicative intention, addressee, function and stylistic devices;
- develop the ability to assess the linguistic and stylistic quality of a text (coherence, cohesion, stylistic appropriateness, linguistic norm);
- practise the conscious choice of appropriate linguistic devices when working with different types of texts;
- get acquainted with the differences and coincidences between Russian and Czech stylistics and with the current tendencies of stylistic development of Russian (digitalization, Internet communication, hybrid genres).
- Learning outcomes
The student will be able to:
- identify and compare neutral and stylistically marked vocabulary in Russian;
- locate expressive and stylistic devices in a text, determine their function;
- consciously choose adequate linguistic and stylistic means in the creation of their own texts;
- make basic stylistic adjustments to the text with regard to the communicative situation and the addressee.
- Key topics
1. Basic terminology of stylistics. The place and definition of stylistics and its object of study in relation to other sub-disciplines of linguistics.
2. The concept of style and functional style. Evolution of the concept of style. The theory of functional styles in Russian linguistics. Differences between Russian and Czech stylistic traditions.
3. Style-forming factors and communicative situations. Addressee, communicative intention, sphere of communication, medium, genre. Style as a result of communicative choice.
4. Differentiation and stratification of the national language. Spelling, unspelling, sociolects, professional and age varieties.
5. Spoken and written language. Specifics of spoken and written texts. Transposition between them, stylization of spokenness in written text.
6. Language norm and stylistic appropriateness. Norm, codification, anxiety.
7. Colloquial style. Basic features, devices and typical genres. Colloquialism in digital communication (chat, social networks).
8. Professional style. Definition of professional style, internal differentiation. Vocabulary, syntax, terminology. Intertextuality of professional texts.
9. Administrative style. Basic characteristics, normativity, genres and formations of administrative style.
10. Publicist style. Written and spoken journalism. Genres of journalism.
11. The belles-lettres style. Basic features and linguistic means. Individual authorial style. Function of stylistic devices in a literary text.
12. Digital and hybrid styles (current trends). Hybrid genres (blog, vlog, meme, commentary, post).
13. Stylistic aspects of text construction. Cohesion, coherence, intertextuality. Complex stylistic analysis of text. Evaluation of linguistic and stylistic quality of texts.

- Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
- Teaching takes the form of lectures and seminars, which are methodically interconnected. During the semester students work on their own portfolio.
- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
- A combination of continuous work in the semestr and a final written test of knowledge and skills. During the semester students complete 7 continuous assignments (portfolio) (max. 150 points), at the end of the semester students write a test (max. 50 points). The test verifies theoretical knowledge of the basic concepts of stylistics, functional styles and their features and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practice in identifying and correcting stylistic errors in the text.
