Abstract
The aim of the course is to develop students’ professional competences through their independent teaching practice at secondary schools. The course emphasizes the application of subject didactics knowledge, the development of teacher self-concept, and the ability to create conditions and opportunities that support student learning.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: analytically observe instruction during a lesson visit; work with pedagogical documentation (especially the Framework Educational Programme, School Educational Programme, and individual study plan); evaluate how conditions for learning can be set and maintained; assess how communication can support student learning and apply this knowledge in their own teaching; prepare a lesson plan and subsequently compare it with the implementation of the actual lesson; set realistic objectives for a lesson and subsequently evaluate their achievement or non-achievement; perceive students as individuals.
Key topics
Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
The practice is administered by the Teaching Practice Manager of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, at a faculty training school or at a school with a formal cooperation agreement. The practice can also be carried out at a school where the student is already employed, provided that the role of a mentor teacher is ensured. However, at least one of the Teaching Practices II or III must take place at a faculty training school. During the practice, a tripartite reflective meeting is held, attended by the student, the mentor teacher, and the university educator. If it is not possible to conduct the tripartite meeting in person (due to the school’s location), the student, in prior agreement with the mentor teacher and subject didactics instructor, arranges a synchronous transmission of their lesson, which is then reflected upon with the mentor teacher and the university educator.
Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
The student keeps a reflective journal, excerpts of which are shared with the instructors and the group. The student repeatedly completes a self-assessment tool in which they evaluate the development of their professional competences during the practice. At the same time, the student submits selected parts of their teaching portfolio. The student also receives feedback from their mentor teacher, who additionally ensures the fulfilment of the required activities during the practice.
