Prerequisites
The course goes beyond the compulsory high literature and focuses on the often neglected popular literature, explaining its rules and development. Students must be able to discuss typical features and development of high literature (using examples from American literature).

Course objectives
This is an introduction to popular literature, both in theory and in practical reading. Students are encouraged to use popular literature in their EL classes.

  • Themes: 1. Introduction to the course; high versus low literature 2. 20th century genres of popular literature 3. Oral literature 4. The western novel 5. The hard-boiled school of detective stories 6. Science fiction and fantasy 7. Comics and graphic novels 8. Reading for women
