Course objectives
Students will get acquainted with basic terms and theoretical issues of picture books (iconotexts) intended for children and young adults. The theoretical knowledge will be used when doing literary-historical analyses of works of European literature for children and young adults (over the last decade, in particular). Students will get familiar with issues of different genres, contemporary developmental trends concerning picture books, and they will be able to analyse visual and textual components of a work with regard to specifics of children’s literature and children s reading.
Syllabus
  • Theoretical determination of picture books, terms connected with iconotexts; specifics of picture books in children’s and young adults’ literature; visual and textual narrator; development of picture books in the contemporary European literature for children and young adults (particular interpretative analyses).

Teaching methods
Via lectures, students will acquire knowledge of literary terminology connected with the pursued issues of picture books, they will analyse styles of reputable European writers of picture books, they will improve their interpretative skills to be able to communicate better with literary works. Concurrently, they will use their knowledge creatively that they have gained not only in lessons but also via their individual study of recommended literature.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: colloquial debate, a student is supposed to prove their ability to interpret a picture book and their familiarity with its European literary context.
