- Course objectives
- Broadening the knowledge about the development of Czech grammar system. Analysis of old-Czech texts. Teaching matter about the development of Czech in secondary school textbooks. At the end of the course, the students will be able: 1 – to understand an Old Czech text; 2 – to detect and determine the linguistic and stylistic features of the Czech language in the selected texts from 14th to 18th centuries; 3 – to look up convenient texts from different developmental periods of Czech and use them in a didactic way in the Czech language lessons at secondary schools.
- Syllabus
- 1 Reading the Old Czech texts from the 14th century. Comparing the13th and 14th century phonological systems. Sound changes occurring in the 14th century, its evidence in the texts. Characteristic features of digraphic orthography in Czech, its difficulties. 2 The 15th and 16th century Czech texts, the reflection of the occurred and occurring changes in these texts. Their comparison with the 14th century texts and with the Modern Czech texts. 3 Grammar works of the 16th century. The Grammar of Náměšť. Jan Blahoslav. Dictionaries. 4 The period after the battle of White Mountain and the problems of its evaluation. The so-called Baroque Czech, the Baroque literary manuscripts. The Czech grammar books of the 17th and 18th centuries. 5 J. Dobrovský and his linguistic work. Language codifications. J. Jungmann work. 6 Language codification in the period of purification of the 19th century. The so-called Matice Purifications. Creation of period special terminology.

- Teaching methods
- A seminar, active analytical students´ work in the analysis of Old Czech texts, active synthetic students´ work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, discussion about the professional course issues.
- Assessment methods
- For a successful completion of the course, the students should complete a written test, where they freely formulate their answers and questions. The test is scored. Students must obtain at least an absolute majority of points.
