Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the students with the orientation in specialized books – in linguistic or literary science bibliography, esp. Journals and other periodicals, including anthologies and conference proceedings and other occasional special publications.
Learning outcomes
It is presupposed:
- Students will master the activities of reviewing and evaluating texts.
- Students will know how to write annotations, résumé, reviews and critiques.
- On the base of their studies students will be able to express different attitudes to the same problems and defend their views.
Syllabus
  • The consultations will be directed to: 1 – Dictionaries, their types and focus; work with the language and literary material.
  • 2 – The main monographic works of Slavic and Czech studies, diachronic and synchronic points of view on the Czech language and Czech literature.
  • 3 – The Slavic and Czech journals, native and also foreign, presentation of Czech studies from abroad.
  • 4 – The important conferences for the development in this field from the 1920th (from the period of Prague Linguistic School activities) up to the presence.
  • 5 – The important conference proceedings and regular or occasional periodicals published by the Faculty.
  • 6 – Methodology of writing reviews and assessments.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: Students hand in a critical review of a professional text – the choice is accomplished by students or on a teacher’s recommendation. A critical review of 1 professional book or an extensive chapter in a monograph is required; alternatively, students write critical reviews of at least 3 professional articles. Detailed requirements are available in each term in Study Materials of the course in the Information System MU, the folder Learning Materials.
