Course objectives
The main purpose of the course is to give a survey of the economical, social and political facts of Bavaria. In doing so, the aim is to enhance awareness of the diversity in the Federal Republic of Germany (comparable to the awareness of the multicentric organization of the German language).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the semester, students should be able
- to name the most important characteristics of modern Bavarian society (concerning economy, political organization and social structure),
- to describe the possibilities of Bavaria to influence decision making within the federal system,
- to relate information given in contemporary texts (e.g. in the media) to the appropriate social and political background,
- to understand the most common vocabulary in texts on Bavarian politics and society (receptive skills) and to express themselves in written and spoken form on topics of public interest in an appropriate manner (productive skills).
Syllabus
  • - Geographical basics of Bavaria,
  • - landmarks of Bavarian history: the long way from the Kingdom of Bavaria to one of the 16 states of the Federal Republic of Germany;
  • - Social and economic structure of Bavaria after World War II, including recent developments;
  • - Political system (the Bavarian Constitution, political constituencies and political actors, electoral system and policies; elements of direct democracy in Bavaria); where convenient, parallels to the political situation in Czech Republic are drawn;
  • - Administrative system, the structure of Bavarian “Bezirke”; competences in the field of legislation and administration of the Federal Republic and Bavaria;
  • - Discussion on the federal organization of states, with opportunity to bring in the Czech perspective;
  • - the school system, cornerstone of the federal organization of Germany; the Bavarian Gymnasium Degree;
  • - Culture life in Bavaria (legislative context, high culture, popular culture, Bavarian film).

Teaching methods
Joint work on the topics (compulsory reading, discussions in the class) and short presentations of the participants.
Assessment methods
In order to acquire two credit points ("zápocet"), students have to hand in all assignments during the term (answering questions related to required reading, short research on topics covered during the term). Additional credit points ("kolokvium") can be acquired by giving a short presentation on a selected topic during the examination term.
Náhradní absolvování
Students who stay abroad during the teaching period (e.g., while participating in the ERASMUS program) will be granted full recognition of an equivalent course chosen from the program of the receiving university. Alternatively, students may work through the material on their own and hand in alle compulsory assignments (homework vaults in the IS), supplemented by a seminar paper on a specific topic in connection with Bavaria (please contact the teacher in case you consider this way of closing the course).

Teacher's information
To support students enrolled in the combined study program in their self guided learning and their reflexion of the achieved learning outcomes, necessary feedback will be provided during the meetings (according to the timetable of the semester) and through written comments on the compulsory assignments. Students should feel free to contact the teacher via e-mail.
