Prerequisites
Sufficient language competence in order to follow the class lectures given in German and to read the required reading (level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in the area of receptive competences).

Course objectives
The aim of the lectures is to provide a short overview of the most important facts of German inflectional morphology. Students have the opportunity to revise their previous knowledge of German morphology and to put it on a more systematic basis. In addition, the lectures introduce the students to the common terminology of the field and to the basic approaches to morphology in linguistics. With respect to practical language use, the lectures deliver the knowledge required to produce the morphological forms of words belonging to the basic and extended basic vocabulary of German.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to
define and explain the basic concepts of morphological analysis (e.g., affix, paradigm, word form etc.);
name the grammatical categories relevant for different parts of speech;
identify the internal structure of inflected or derived words and to distinguish between both types (inflection vs. derivation);
they become aware of the different possibilities of arranging German nouns and verbs into inflectional classes and are able to compare and evaluate the different approaches.
Syllabus
  • - The content of morphology, the place of morphology among the linguistic disciplines;
  • - Grammatical categories and the internal structure of the word form;
  • - Basic concepts of morphology: root, stem, affix, grammatical markers; lexeme, paradigm, word form;
  • - Inflectional classes of the German noun; connection between inflectional class and noun gender/animacy;
  • - pronominal inflection;
  • - Are there inflectional classes with German adjectives?
  • - Inflection and derivation; determination of inflectional class and gender by suffixes;
  • - Finite and infinite verbal forms;
  • - The inflectional classes of the verb; classification of strong verbs according to the type of apophony;
  • - Verbal morphology depending on the syntactic properties of the verb;
  • - Morphology and morphosyntax of modal verbs; praeteritopraesentia and morphological adjustment of verbs expressing modal meanings;
  • - Modal semantics: deontic and epistemic meaning of modalverbs;
  • - Analytical forms in the verbal paradigm and auxiliaries;

It is recommended to enrol in the exercises (NJ_G211 Cvičení z německé morfologie) covering the material of the lectures from a practical point of few. The exercises are suited especially for foreign language students who want to emprove their language skills in German.
