Course objectives
The course deals with the basic concepts of economic development from the point of view of the environment. The main goal of the course is to acquaint students with the basic knowledge and principles of environmental protection and sustainable development and economic context.
Learning outcomes
After successful finishing of this course students should be able to: - describe basic environmental continuities of economic development; - explain causes of market failure in the area of environmental goods; - demonstrate decisive instruments and measures stimulating implementation of strategy of sustainable development and - analyse their basic economic impacts.

  • Environmental quality and environmental policy at international level and in the Czech Republic
  • The concept of sustainable development and its application
  • Instruments and measures for environmental protection
  • Institutions ensuring environmental protection
  • Costs and financing of environmental protection
  • Methods of environmental assessment
  • Waste management and circular economy
  • Energy and climate policy

Teaching methods
Lessons take place mainly in the form of lectures (every week) and seminars (once every 14 days). Activity in seminars and continuous self-study is expected.
Assessment methods
The evaluation consists of two parts. During the semester, the student is evaluated for work and activity in seminars, for which he must obtain at least 60% of points. The course then concludes with a written exam, in which the student must obtain at least 60% of points as well. Detailed conditions are regulated in the study plan, which is published at the beginning of each semester.
Erasmus students will prepare a 10-page seminar paper on the chosen topic after agreement with the subject guarantor and proceed to the written exam.
