Course objectives
The goal is to provide the course participants with an overview of the PhD study at Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University. Upon completing the course, the participants will have a clear view on the structure of PhD study, its formal and professional requirements, and of its role within the context of both academic and industry careers. They will also have understanding of basic principles of research work and of skills needed for a successful completion of a PhD study. Another goal of the course is to create space in which 1st-year PhD students at FI MU can network with each other, irrespective of their research backgrounds.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the participants will have a clear view on the structure of PhD study, its formal and professional requirements, and of its role within the context of both academic and industry careers. They will also have understanding of basic principles of research work and of skills needed for a successful completion of a PhD study.
Syllabus
  • Introduction of the course participants.
  • Why have I decided to pursue a PhD degree?
  • Strategies of an efficient research work (research, writing, handling literature, teamwork,...)
  • Formal requirements of a PhD study at FI MU. Publication process, quality of publication venues.
  • Short presentations of the participants' research topics.
  • Psychological aspects of a PhD study. (Motivation, self-care, uncertainties about the PhD process...)
  • Career prospects, milestones of an academic career.
  • Discussion panel: academic vs. industry careers.
  • Final wrap-up and discussion.
